Getting There from Africa

Travellers from Southern Africa have a limited choice of flights into Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flies from Cape Town and Johannesburg four times a week into Kuala Lumpur and is the only airline offering direct flights from Southern Africa. Air Mauritius calls into Kuala Lumpur from Port Louis once a week and offers connecting services from Cape Town, Durban, Harare and Johannesburg. Alternative routes may be found travelling with Singapore Airlines (SIA), which offers flights from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg via Singapore. South African Airways only flies direct to Bangkok, which tends to push the fare price up when you consider adding the Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur fare. A roundabout route involves flying to Perth either from Johannesburg or Harare with Qantas and then connecting onto an MAS service bound for Kuala Lumpur in Australia.

A recent addition in choice is to travel via the Middle East with Emirates offering connections via Dubai.

Travellers from North-East Africa can fly direct from Cairo with Malaysia Airlines (code-shared with EgyptAir) twice weekly or choose a Middle-Eastern carrier like Emirates, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air or Saudia, changing planes at their home-bases. Air-India also offers some interesting options via Mumbai or Delhi.

Travellers from West Africa tend to transfer via Europe with KLM now offering the best connections.
