Getting there from South America

Travellers from South America have only one option where direct flights are concerned as Malaysia Airlines continues to be the only airlines connecting Southeast Asia with the South American continent.

Currently MAS' services leave Buenos Aires twice weekly and routes via South Africa for Kuala Lumpur on board the Boeing 747-400. Passengers from Brazil may find Johannesburg can be used as an alternative transit point with both Varig and South African Airways operating from Rio de Janeiro. Alternatively, Aerolineas Argentinas and Lan-Chile fly over the South Pacific into Sydney. Onward flights can then be picked up in Australia.

Other routes available involve a gruelling route via Europe with KLM or via the USA changing at Los Angeles. Another option from Brazil is to travel via Japan with Varig or Japan Airlines.

  • KLM-Royal Dutch Airlines. Very useful for many South American cities with frequent flights into Amsterdam from where KL is another 13 hours away.
  • South African Airways (SAA). Flies between Buenos Aires and Johannesburg and connections on to Kuala Lumpur can then be booked.
