British citizens and those of the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Netherlands do not require a visa to enter Malaysia. Citizens of the United States, most European countries and Japan need visas only for visits over three months; while French nationals require a visa for stays longer than one month. All other nationals should contact their local Malaysian embassy for details of visa requirements. Passports must be valid for at least three months (six months if you’re going to Sabah and Sarawak also) beyond your date of departure.
On entry, you usually get stamped in for two months. Should you need to extend your stay, it’s supposed to be a straight-forward matter taken care of at the immigration office (located at Pusat Damansara, see listings) and in theory, visitors can extend their stay for up to six months in total, although this is subject to the discretion of the official you encounter. In practice, there’s rarely a problem with extending your stay an extra month but it may be simpler just to visit Singapore or another neighbouring country for a couple of days before returning for a new stamp.
Tourists travelling from the Peninsula to East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) must carry a valid passport and pass through immigration facilities at the airport; visitors to Sabah can remain as long as their original two-month stamp is valid whilst visitors to Sarawak will receive a new one-month stamp which is rarely extendable.

Customs and Excise
Malaysia’s duty-free allowances lets you bring in 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco, and wine, spirits or liquor not exceeding 75cl. In addition, duty is not payable on electrical goods, cameras, watches, cosmetics and perfumes. Domestic passengers travelling onwards to Sabah or Sarawak do not have to clear Customs again.
Arrivals duty-free shops are available at most International airports in Malaysia and also exist at other points of entry. All passengers purchasing duty-free items at airports have to produce passports and boarding passes on payment as duty-free sales are not available to domestic passengers.
Drugs
In Malaysia, the possession of drugs – hard or soft – carries a hefty prison sentence and trafficking is punishable by the death penalty. If you are caught smuggling drugs into or out of the country, at the very best you are facing a long stretch in a foreign prison; at worst, you could be hanged. This is no idle threat, as the Malaysians have in the recent past shown themselves to be prepared to pass the death sentence on any foreign traveller. The simple answer, of course is not to have anything to do with drugs in Malaysia; and never agree to carry anything through customs for a third party. Also remember to keep an eye on your luggage at all times when travelling - but that goes without saying in ANY country.
Insurance
Travel insurance is a wise thing to have whilst on holiday regardless of where you take that holiday and Malaysia is no exception. Many travel agents now offer their own travel insurers as you book your flight, whilst on the high-street many companies now offer very good deals depending on the length of time that you are away. American Express and many other companies also offer yearly travel insurance for little more than a 3-month insurance package and may be a good option for those who spend a significant amount of time away from home.
These travel insurance packages usually include health-cover should you fall ill before or during your holiday, insurance against the loss or theft of any items of possession as well as insurance against flight-delays and cancellations and so on.
Insurance policies do vary depending on the country you live in and your travel agent is probably the best person to ask should you have any queries.
