Prince William ship offers adventure for young Scots (June)

Britain's first ship named after Prince William has arrived in her home port for an official christening.
The £5.5 million ship, built for the Sail Training Association, is being named in Glasgow by the city's Lord Provost, Alex Mosson.
A total of 48 young Scots are crewing the new ship as she made her maiden voyage up the Clyde for the ceremony.
One of just five women captains in the UK, Barbara Campbell, is at the helm. The Prince William is the biggest Sail Training Ship ever registered north of the border. She will be used primarily to take people aged 16-24 to sea for adventure training. More than 175 youngsters have reserved a berth for one of this year's 10-day European voyages.

Prince William aide breaks legs in crash (May)

A royal aide who helped Prince William devise his gap year is recovering after breaking his legs in a motorcycle accident.
Mark Dyer, 35, a close friend of the 18-year-old prince, came off his bike in central London while negotiating traffic.
The former Welsh Guards captain had an operation in a London hospital and is now able to walk again.
The Prince, currently in Africa on a trip he organised with Mr Dyer, is being kept informed of his progress, said St James's Palace.
A spokeswoman said: "The accident happened a few weeks ago and was very serious.
"But he is out of hospital now and walking again. He's out and about and getting on with things."
She added: "Prince William was informed and is obviously concerned."
Mr Dyer, a former equerry to the Prince of Wales, made the arrangements for William to visit Chile with Raleigh International last year.

Undergraduate Prince sends property prices soaring (May)

Prince William's impending arrival at St Andrews University has sent property prices in the area soaring.
Average weekly rents for student accommodation have doubled to £100 and town flats are selling at 20% above asking price.
Estate agents say local people are struggling to compete with wealthy parents. The university wants to build a new £7 million accommodation block to ease the problem.
Principal Dr Brian Lang, is advertising for public-sector tenders willing to take on an 'accelerated' contract so the building is ready for the 2002 academic year.
The advert says: "Unique circumstances which could not have been foreseen require the university to provide additional accommodation," according to The Times.
Stephen Brown, of Eve Brown letting agent, said: "St Andrews is an elite university. It attracts people who have a lot of money and the locals have to compete with them when it comes to buying houses. It is very, very difficult."
Local estate agents say the St Andrews property market was already healthy, but it will be sustained for several years by the arrival of Prince William.

Far off the beaten track in northern Kenya lies Lewa Downs, the setting for Prince William’s greatest adventure in his three-and-a-half month trip to Africa. On the latest stage of his gap year, William has been travelling around the vast continent learning about wildlife and game conservation and has spent more than a month at the remote and luxurious game reserve taking part in the fight to save some of Africa’s vanishing herds.

Last year, while doing community work in South America, William camped out in icy conditions and took his turn cleaning lavatories and cooking meals. But this time, in the wilderness of tropical Africa, he opted for comfort. Lewa Downs accommodates up to 16 guests in thatched cottages with en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. It boasts jogging trails, a tennis court and a swimming pool nearby. But the main attraction is game viewing from vehicles, on foot or on camels. The area is among the best in Africa for spotting endangered elephant and rhinos.

William’s trip to Lewa Downs was arranged by the Tusk Trust, an organisation whose aim is to conserve African wildlife, particularly rhino and elephant. Travelling in four-wheel-drive vehicles as well as observing animals from the air by helicopter, the Prince helped game wardens track the movement of wildlife. He also helped the wardens treat injured elephants. They would be located via radio signals from collars around their necks and tranquillised with anaesthetic darts before their wounds could be treated.

Wow, has it really been 3 monthes since my last update? My appologies. I'm very busy with school, I just finished my last exams 8 hours ago....Yay! I'm sooo happy! There's not much in the world of William lately, so we're not missing much, I hope.

From what I've heard, Wills is currently in Africa, and he will spend a total of three and a half monthes there. Hopefully we will be getting OFFICIAL pictures from Africa soon. Perhaps for his 19th birth day William will reward the press for respecting his privacy with some new photos.

I also updated the Gossip section, because the mail box was getting full, and stuff was being deleted automatically, without me knowing! So go check it out. Anyways, I think it's now officially SPRING, all the blossoms are so pretty!

Sunday, 10 December, 2000, 05:58 GMT William walks on the wild side (BBC)

The prince is now based at a campsite in the remote coastal village of Tortel after an expedition kayaking in ocean fjords and tracking a rare Huemul deer in the Tamango National Reserve.

"The living conditions here aren't exactly what I'm used to. But they are definitely better than I've had in the past six weeks," he said.

"We're living in an old nursery. It has got a vague carpet and a roof over our heads, which is more than we've had. We sleep on the floor on a sleeping bag with about 16 other people all cramped together."

The prince's first brush with adversity during the trip, which started on 1 October, came when his kayaking group was stranded on a beach during a five-day storm.

"The wind whipped up into a storm. The tents were flapping around so violently that we thought they were going to blow away," he said.

"Everything was soaked through. It was quite demoralizing."

Earning the respect of fellow volunteers
Having survived the expedition, William moved to Tortel, about 950 miles south of the Chilean capital Santiago where he has helped locals build wooden walkways to link their homes and an extension to the fire station.

He is also teaching English to local schoolchildren - but ran into trouble explaining the "W" in his name.

Standing before a class of 10 and 11-year-olds, he wrote his name on a board and then had to draw an animal starting with the same letter

Struggling to think of one, William came up with wombat and, then at a loss to draw one, wrote in clear blue letters: "My name is William. I am a wombat."

Popular prince

William has mixed with the locals, including a bit of salsa dancing, and has enjoyed being treated as an "equal" by the other volunteers.

Chilean Patagonia, he says, is an amazing place.

Marie Wright, the 29-year-old project manager for Raleigh in Tortel, said William has earned the respect of his colleagues who come from all walks of life in the UK and around the world.

About 20% of young people taking part in the trip come from a disadvantaged background, having been unemployed, or involved in drugs or crime.

"He's popular on his own merit," said Ms Wright.

"He gets on with the work, he's very humble and laid back and likes to be normal, and there's no reference to his background."

One of William's fellow volunteers, a 17-year-old homeless boy who says he came on Raleigh to escape a life of drugs, said he was having the experience of a lifetime.

I take the Mickey out of him all the time and call him `Little Princess'. He doesn't mind, he just laughs along with it.

Raleigh venturer
"Everyone gets on really well and William fits right in," he said. "I take the Mickey out of him all the time and call him `Little Princess'.

"He doesn't mind, he just laughs along with it."

Some of William's colleagues have a lot to thank him for.

When a fire broke out in a camp shelter the prince is reported to have been on hand to help tackle the blaze and stop it spreading.

Flames destroyed the wooden shelter, but the group's kit was rescued by the prince and the camp's medic.

William decided to join the expedition during his gap year between school and university because he wanted to do something "different" and help people.

Next year, he begins his studies at St. Andrew's University in Scotland.

There are some stamps to comemorate William's 18th Birthday.

PROUD Prince William has passed his basic motorbike test - and can now heir around on a trendy scooter. The motorbike-mad lad, who has ridden trials and quad bikes on dad Charles's Highgrove estate, breezed through the compulsory test. He will now be allowed to take to the road on a scooter or bike provided its engine capacity does not exceed 125cc. But he must use L-plates until he gets a full rider's licence. He may be tempted to buy a Vespa like those owned by a host of stars including Blur's Damon Albarn and comic Harry Enfield. Wills, who passed his CAR test a month after his 17th birthday last June, took the bike exam in Hendon, North London. He has always wanted a motorbike even though Charles resisted by giving him a VW Golf for his birthday. A Royal source said: "William will use a motorcycle for short trips only."

PRINCE WILLIAM will live in a £1m town house when he begins his studies at Edinburgh University. He had been expected to stay in Holyrood Palace, the official royal residence in Scotland. But William, 17, wants to live as normal a life as possible during his four years as a student. He has opted to lodge in an elegant four-storey house, owned by the Queen, in the trendy New Town district. The house is a short stroll from several pubs, clubs and restaurants. His neighbours will be the city's elite professionals. The Prince starts a History of Art course in October next year after he leaves Eton. A New Town resident said: "This is easily the best address in Edinburgh."
