Believe it or not, in Greek myth Endymion was a shepherd boy (even
though some stories hint at his true, kingly nature). Even though he
was often seen as a commoner, no one could doubt his breath-taking
physical beauty. (Sound like anyone we know, girls? =^.~=)
One night, as Endymion was tending his sheep, he fell asleep on
the hill where they grazed. Looking down from the sky, the moon
goddess Selene saw Endymion and immediately fell in love. She was
so in love, in fact, that she came down from her home in the sky to
kiss him as he slept.Selene decided that she wanted to keep him
forever because of his beauty, so she kissed him into an eternal
sleep.
As a result of this potent kiss, Endymion never awoke to see
Selene. Night after night she visits him on the mountaintop where he
spends his eternal slumber, but it only brings her pain to see him
forever motionless and immune to her charms. After all, what is the
use in loving someone who cannot love you back?
(Of course, we all know that this could never happen to our dear King Endymion. However, maybe he should be careful to avoid anyone who seems a little too friendly.....)
