When the lockout came to a surprising end, the Raptors found themselves without a point guard. With little left on the free agent market, they signed 2nd year player Alvin Williams to a one year contract, placing a lot of responsibility on the young man's shoulders. Last year as a rookie Williams started 10 games for Portland while Kenny Anderson was injured. During this stretch, the Blazers went 9-1, and Toronto fans hope that Williams' winning ways will follow him to Toronto.

Williams played his college ball at Villanova where he was an honourable mention All-American in his final year. He was drafted in the second round by Portland in the 1997 draft and established himself as the backup to Kenny Anderson. In the spring of 1998 he was traded to Toronto in the deal which sent Damon Stoudamire to Portland. Williams was injured soon after arriving in Toronto and played a very limited role in the 1997-98 season.

This year so far Williams has proven a solid if unspectacular point guard, able to protect the ball and not commit turnovers. However, his shooting has been awful and must improve if he wishes to keep his starting job. Because of his poor shooting, he has often been left on the bench in crunch time in favour of veteran Dee Brown.
