She leaned against the window frame, looking at the rainy night street through the foggy window. For a while after he passed away, she used to cry until she lost her voice. Tears used to flow down her pale cheeks nonstop; just like the rain sliding down the on the glass of the window in front of her. But tonight, she had no more tears. She still missed him dearly. Her best friend for years, the only person who really knew her.

She lowered her eyes, wondering if he would ever come back, if she would ever see him... Was it just a dream? Yes, it was just a nightmare... when she opened her eyes, he would be there by her side. Then she would be able to tell him the three words she wanted to say all these time...

Her eyelids became heavier and heavier. When was the last time she got some sleep? Two days ago? Three days ago? She closed her eyes and let out a sigh. As much as she wanted to cry out loud and scream, she remained dead silence. No, crying and screaming would not take away her pain. Nothing would ever take away her pain...

She let her mind wandered back to all the good times she had with him. All the laughter they shared, all the silly things they did together... So insignificant when it happened, yet so precious to her now. Her body began to relax as the memories soothed her racy mind. Almost every part of her exhausted body had fallen asleep, except for her mind. Behind her closed eyes, she saw scenes from the past flied by, as if she was watching a silent slide show. The scenes changed continuously, until it reached to the last time she saw him alive. Then it stopped. She could see nothing but complete darkness. Yet she did not have the strength to open her eyes. Briefly she wondered why she could not hear the rainfall anymore; but it didn’t matter to her. Nothing mattered to her anymore. She complied and remained at that stage, being all alone in the darkness, not able to see or hear anything... until a voice raised in her mind.

A voice she longed to hear.

"You need to rest... Please get some sleep... Don't wait for me anymore... for I will never come back..."

As if being hypnotized, she lost her every bit of her consciousness as the voice in her head slowly faded away.

Slowly she opened eyes. Had she fallen asleep? Her stiffened and aching body told her otherwise. She brushed a few strands of hair off her face, then she froze. Something on her hand had caught her eye. She immediately held up her hand to take a good look. A gasp escaped from her lips; her eyes widened in shock as she saw what was on one of her fingers.

A satin-polished platinum ring.
