What Does MEC Need?

After printing our last reply on our web site, we e-mailed MEC and asked them to specifically name the information they would need to come to a conclusion about the strike and JB Fields's labour practices. MEC responded, but didn't ask for any specific information... leading us to believe we were right all along -- that no amount of info will ever make MEC decide. They don't need more information, they need the backbone to stand up and make the correct moral decision: STOP SELLING JB FIELDS SOCKS!

Included in MEC's reply to us (in red) were the claims:

"The facts that we have been able to discover, that would lead MEC to a definitive decision, remain far from conclusive."

"the jury is still out..."

and, "we cannot... give you a definitive answer... "

This is more of the same nonsense that they've been spouting from the start. It becomes all the more absurd when you consider all the information that they've had a chance to view (by their own admission):

"So far MEC has:

· Spoken on the phone to two people (Stacy-Ann Rousseau and David St. Louis) representing Unite 1764 to review their position.

· Spoken on the phone to Tim Denton representing the JB Fields view.

· Asked for position papers that explained, in detail with supporting facts, the issues involved from Unite 1764, Friends of Unite 1764 and JB Fields.

· Reviewed papers from Unite 1764 and JB Fields (none received from Friends of Unite 1764) and followed up on the phone on the two papers.

· Reviewed all information available on the Friends of Unite 1764 website.

· Reviewed all related news articles.

· Reviewed various other pieces of information as they were forwarded. These ranged from phone calls from people on both sides of the issue to petitions, also from both sides.

· Reviewed our sourcing policy within the framework of this information.

· Asked for and received legal counsel as to what our responsibilities were under the law."

How can MEC expect us to believe they still don't have enough information? What specifically do they need to know to resolve the "inconclusive" nature of the evidence they've seen?

MEC won't say because they want an excuse to avoid action. MEC is starting to sound like the cigarette companies that keep denying there is a link between smoking and cancer. Yeah, to them that's "inconclusive", to them the "jury is still out" too. And no number of new studies will ever convince them because it's not a question of ignorance -- it's a question of self-interest.

MEC it's time you started to act like the RESPONSIBLE company you claim to be! Take a stand for fair labour practices. Take a stand for women's rights. Stop selling JB Fields socks.
