Greetings from the Sunny Prairies,
On Saturday, Aug. 29, a rag-tag band of unionists and student
activists picketed Eatons in downtown Regina. Leaflets were handed to
every person entering Eatons that afternoon and we spoke with them about
why we were there whenever possible. Although some people were hostile
(obviously uncomfortable with real people sending messages rather than
machines and billboards), the majority of the people we spoke with were
supportive.
Besides being dissappointed with the turnout (local activists
suffering from burnout?), we were happy with the results. Bored with
standing infront of the doors, a fellow member of our Students' Union
executive joined me in wandering through a farmers' market downtown and
handing out more pamphelts, talking to more people. We decided to leave
after an about 2 hours of picketing. Noticing that we had over 100
leaflets remaining, I made a quick tour through Eatons, scattering the
remaining leaflets on tables full of socks and panties, in belts on
manequins, under those plastic price tag covers, and wherever else I saw
space.
Apparently Eatons security is so busy looking for people taking
things, they neglect to even notice when people start leaving things, as I
walked out entirely unnoticed. I reccommend this as a safe and effective
tactic for distributing information about Eatons and JB Fields. I'm sure
the leaflets were collected not long after being distributed, but it made
me feel kinda sneaky, like a propaganda bandit, and that was fun.
