Today was day 2 of our daily noon hour picket and they were waiting for us.
Within 2 minutes of arriving security emerged from Eaton's to inform us that
they "owned" the sidewalk and that they had people on the way to "remove"
us. Having checked on the legalities of picketing and armed with the info
about our right to call a boycott - but not having checked about who owns
the sidewalk, we decided to move away from right in front of Eaton's - for
now.
Approximately 2 minutes later we were practically knocked over by a
group of 3 security people who were RUNNING full speed to get to the doors
to remove us. Much to their disapointment I'm sure we had already moved so
they stood around for about 10 minutes doing their best to look intimidating
and pointing at us etc.
Not to be left out of the fun we pointed back and
walked right up to their supposed property etc. A passer-by was quite upset
they asked us to move and informed us that he was sure that they didn't in
fact own the sidewalk. I went over to a pay-phone to call the city and
check, but no one was available over the noon hour. We are currently
checking into this for tomorrow (tentative inquiries with the city police
and the city indicate that they were lying to us, we'll have confirmation
later this afternoon) when we will be back to start the fun all over again!
