WHERE IS THE DAWN?

For My Suffering Afghan Sisters And All other Women Who Suffer The Same Plight

By
Zieba Shorish-Shamley

July 12, 2000

Oh! Where is the dawn in this darkest night?
War is raging on, for gains of those with might
Ruins are all around, dead everything, no life
Homeland dies of thirst, shrubs dry like knife

Hunger, thirst and ills, have fallen on us all
Even plants and animals, must pay for this toll
Fire burns in North, drought engulf the South
Nothing will be left, this is without a doubt

Terrorist, thugs and thieves, in my beloved land
Murder young and old, or cut limbs and hand
Bands of armed thieves, illegal drug and arm
No justice in this land, chaos is the norm

Women, girls and boys, we are bought and sold
Used for sex like animals, masters cruel and cold
The sex-salves are made of girls ages nine
Child soldiers ages ten, killed in the front line

The children are hungry, thirsty and all ill
Searching crumbs of food and every garbage pail
Have lost home and parents, they have lost all hope
No one seems to care, to teach them how to cope

They know the bitter truth, that future is lost
They must pay with lives, that is what it cost
If not die of hunger, landmines and disease
Kill them by the thousands, the pain never ease

Rulers, foreign agents, hostage Afghan nation
They aim to kill us all, by force, suffocation
The Talib is a puppet, of foreign intervention
Ruling my own land, making new convention

Invaders who are Paks, Arabs, others as well
Robbing all we have, no one dares to tell
Rampant run assailants, in my beloved land
Raping women and girls, bury people in sand

Listen to these edicts, impose the foreign rule
No sense in them all, they do belong to fool(s)
No base in religion, culture or tradition
They force upon the people, edicts, prohibition(s)

Talibs have decreed that, women are like beasts
Corrupt, evil and harmful, to say the very least
"Chain them to the wall, beat them with the whip"
"If they resist the order, cut off tongs and lip(s)"

"Keep them in the cell, they cannot leave home"
" Must bury them alive, in deepest darkest tomb"
" Kill them with stones, or set them all alight"
" Protect our honor, this is the man's right!"

"Keep them in the dark, no right of education"
" They cannot work at all, keep ill Afghan nation"
" Keep on destroying, knowledge, art and book(s)"
" Erase ancient history, everywhere you look"

"We must rule this nation," this is the foreign call
"We must have this land, we must have it all"
" Gas, oil, all the riches, and everything in sight"
" All must belong to us, for this is our right!"

My people helpless pray, attacked by foreign dogs
Torn in to different pieces, chained to the heavy logs
No one to help this nation, that has suffered so long
When will the torture end? Who will right this wrong?

When will the dawn come, in this accursed night?
When will there be peace, when will end this fight?
When is there an end, to all atrocious crime(s)?
When will we see again, no war, freedom time?
