Our Fall camp, this year, was held at Camp Woolsey, the week after Thanksgiving (in Canada) and it could have been VERY cold. We were prepared. We went out to camp after watching the weather reports for the three days before, and we were treated to a lovely weekend!
By the time we arrived on Friday evening it was quite dark, however there is a large street light type light over the campsite and we didn't have any difficulty setting up our tents. The leaves were all over the ground and it was 'crisp' out. The temperature hovered around 8 degrees Celsius. Chilly, but not freezing.
The girls were prepared for a cool evening. The tents went up quickly, in a circle on Trefoil site, just in front of the canvas tents that are usually down before that weekend.
The girls stowed their food inside the building, ate their snack, and did the portions of programme that they had planned over the previous three weeks.
AND we were delighted to discover that we still had "FLUSHIES" and running water at the washroom across from the site - the water would not be shut off until Sunday!! What a treat. This saved everyone from using the wheelbarrows to tote their water carriers from Wright (a site about half a kilometer up the road!)
By the time I went to bed, I was ready to sleep. I had brought with me my summer weight sleeping bag, my homemade fleecy liner AND my (so-called) winter weight sleeping bag. My winter weight sleeping bag IS nice and warm, however my metabolism must just about stop in the night because I get cold in my nice warm waterbed (which is heated!!). My plan had been to use the winter weight bag WITH the liner. And if it was REALLY cold, I would put the summer weight bag inside the winter one with the liner INSIDE of that. (I have slept with that at -18 Celsius, well below freezing in two feet of snow - inside my tent, and been quite comfortable, so I knew I would be fine.) However, it wasn't that cold, I was quite comfortable in the winter bag with the liner. I had my thermorest AND a blue foamie between me and the ground. And lots of layers of clothing. I find my long underwear makes dandy bottoms for pyjamas - and with a pair of comfortable sweat pants, and warm socks my lower half was toasty. Don't you hate it when your feet get COLD?
