District Camp once again!! Yahoo. The theme this year was Christmas in June! We arrived on Friday evening and set up our site in the tents of Woods Site. Woods is one of my favourite sites at Camp Woolsey, as it is almost possible to believe that you are camping alone - the site is surrounded by trees. The girls were thrilled to watch a family of ground hogs waddle in and out from under the building on Woods where we could make crafts, eat meals or just sit inside.
Saturday morning we made Christmas decorations to put up on a tree on our site. Little "God's eyes" made of twigs found on the ground and yarn, made lovely decorations, as well as popcorn strung like beads on string. We made Christmas decorations with old Christmas Cards and the round lids off of frozen juice cans. We cut out two pictures from pretty cards and glued one to the front of the can lid and one to the back, with a loop of yarn in between so that the decoration could be hung on the tree. The Camp Committee went around and judged the sites - ours won THE MOST COLOURFUL SITE award!
One of the Pathfinders had missed her Gold Camp because the high school band was away (well, it seemed like a pretty good excuse as these things go!) So she did her Gold Camp while we were all enjoying Christmas. We asked her to plan her program, allowing Program time on Saturday afternoon, that would be planned by District.
Saturday morning and afternoon each Camp Committee representative was asked to provide programming in the form of a station. The stations were set up behind Tamarack Site, where there is a large open area. We worked on the Ontario Arts Challenge, White Water, made a bracelet and anklets with bells and learned a dance; learned a new song; created skits; had a 'snow ball' fight and did water relays. The sky was blue and the sun beat down on us - the water relays were a life saver!
Saturday evening's meal was a full turkey dinner. One of the Guiders (who shall remain nameless) is quite afraid of mice. Guess what lives in the kitchen at Woods? Guess who decided to skitter across the kitchen floor while there were 2 Guiders and about 5 Pathfinders in the kitchen? What odds would you lay that the Guider who is afraid of mice would be one of the two? Bingo! I don't know who was more frightened, but I'd wager that it WASN'T the mouse.
Despite scaring the mouse half to death, the turkey dinner was completed in good time. Mashed potatoes, roast turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, salad and freezies for dessert. What more could you ask for?
Well, campfire of course. After the dishes were done and the food was cleared away, we all trooped over to the Council Fire where we sang Christmas Carols, and Old Saint Nick even put in an appearance! Candy canes were handed out - it was a blast!
Sunday morning came quickly. We did our own Guides Own, lead by Leslie who was doing her Gold Camp. After packing and cleaning up, we headed over to the group closing. It was our pleasure to award Leslie her Gold Camp, which she had to work so hard to earn, in front of everyone in the District. Crests were handed out to everyone! And daylight taps were sung!
The buses were loaded and everyone went home to the rest of a 'normal' June!
