Tage

"In the Beginning"

The story was well known amongst the tribe. One of the wood-elf rangers had brought a stranger with him when he came to the tribe that winter.

He was a moon elf, one who had long lost his kinship of the forest. His actions were strange, and his reasons for being with the wood elf were unknown to the rest of the tribe. They welcomed him cautiously, and they eagerly awaited his goodbyes.

The winter, being as it is, had the travelers held up with the tribe for a few days. The moon elf, in his "generosity," produced a large quantity of wine, and gave cause for a large celebration. It was on this occasion that D'Nae, daughter of the shamaness, drank more than she should, and when she awoke the next morning, found that she had coupled with the moon elf the night previous.

Ashamed and embarrassed, she fled his bedside, though her night of revelry was known already to the entirety of the tribe. The Wood elf and the Moon elf went along their way once the forest was more amicable to travel in. Soon after, D'Nae realized that the traveler had not wholly left. Nine months later, Tage was born. D'Nae, only just reaching beyond her childhood years, was disgusted with the child. She looked the same as any other Wild Elf child, but her mother knew different. Her night of shame would never be forgotten with the child around. D'Nae soon gave the child to a distant relative - a Shamaness in a different Tribe. It was there that Tage grew up. Perhaps it was for the better overall. Growing up in her mothers tribe, she would've had to endure ridicule and embarrassment, where here she was know as the adopted child of the Shamaness – a much better fate to be sure.

One day, soon after Tage's 100th summer, a strange thing happened. Refugees began to arrive from Tage's mother's tribe. There was an attack by followers of Malar, an attack that ended D'Nae's life, as well as many other brave warriors. Near her age was also the son of the former chieftain.

Tage, now fully grown, looked much like her mother. Tage thought it strange that people continually called her D'Nae, until the son of the former chieftain revealed the story to her. He was bitter at her already. She had refused him after she had returned from her monthly trip to the forest. And his words bit at her heart like fire – the daughter of a...Moon Elf. A moon elf! The insult slapped harder than it was intended, and the raging female soon had the male on his back, begging for his life.

It was here that the Shamaness intervened. The Shamaness took Tage to their home amidst the trees, and told her that it was her time to go.

"You are destined for great things" she was told. "We cannot teach you further, here. Your powers are manifesting, and your heart soars to other places that you do not know of, yet. You will return, my daughter, but only once you've learned what the world has to teach you.

“Only then our tribe will be blessed again with your presence, and again with the knowledge you bring to us."

Tage reluctantly left to find her destiny.

Little did she know the triumphs and the sorrows she was soon to endure.
