Friesian Facts

The friesian hores origionated in Holland (The Netherlands) in a province of Friesland. It's name is taken from Friesland, but the Friesian is known as Friesche Hynder in Holland. It was imported to North America in the 16 hundreds, but was lost due to Crossbreeding. It wasn't allowed back into North America until 1974. The Friesian has been influenced by eastern bloodlines, and was almost extinct.

Characteristics

  • Are usually 15 to 16 hh, although alot are smaller or larger
  • Average weight is 1300+ Pounds
  • Only colour is Black, although the range of blacks is from black-bay, to true black
  • Carries much of the same blood as the Andalusian and Lipizzan
  • Conformation:
    The head is short and the width is proportional in the length. Eyes are large and shining, Ears are small and alert. The head overall is very expressive. It is proportional to the neck. The Neck is lightly arching at the crest, and is set high. The Withers are prominent and well developed, and the Back is not long and well muscled. The Shoulders are sloping and set wide apart to form a good chest. The Joints in theLegs are well developed and are dry. They provide good foundation to the ligaments and tendons. Mane and Tail are luxurious and full, as well as long, and are rarely seen pulled or banged. In shows you usually see the horses mane in a running braid. Friesians Fetlocks also have a reasonable amount of silky feathering, but the amount changes with the horse.
  • Movement:
    The walk is straight, and vigorous, and has a good length of stride, and the hind quarters bring in alot of power. The trot is a movement with power from hind quarters, and is elevated with a moment of suspension. The Canter is lively and well supported with alot of power from the hind quarters.
