William GRIMES b. about 1775-1777 married Polly Wilhite between 1795 and 1797, found in Jackson County, GA 1802 deeding land with Polly. On the census 1820, many legal documents in the 1820's and lastly 1830 as juror with William Jr and Gabriel W. On the 1820,several older sons whose dates of birth fit An unknown son probably born 1797-98, Gabriel b.1799-1800, William Jr. b.1808-10 and Washington GRIMES b.1812, listed herein, found later in 1830 Madison County, GA census, no father or mother listed with them and William the father no longer in Jackson County, GA nor on census in the surrounding counties.I'm quite sure it's the same family as the one Jackson County, GA William GRIMES family 1820. William, the son of William GRIMES and Mildred Drury, along with Thomas M. GRIMES, daughter Carter and Betsy (may be Patsy) named in his Elbert County, GA will written Dec 1794, proved Jan 8, 1795, named William GRIMES whom I believe to be the same listed herein, married to Polly WILHITE, father of Gabriel GRIMES listed below.
Recently Glenn Paul discovered the land being sold by William GRIMES and Polly GRIMES in May 1802 Elbert was the same 400 acres on Brush Creek that William GRIMES, son of William and Mildred, received from his father, named in the will 1795 Elbert County GA. It was also discovered that the same 400 acres on Brush Creek was purchased by William GRIMES while in Wilkes County GA in around 1788. To me this is the clincher that I have been looking for. It now appears that WIlliam GRIMES who married Deana Taylor was not the son of William GRIMES and Mildred Drury but rather William GRIMES who married Polly WILHITE is the son of William and Mildred, making him brothers to Thomas M. Grimes of Madison County, GA. William who married Polly and William who married Deana Taylor in the area, were not one in the same, dates of marriage are too close for the two when marrying these spouses.
I believe that Mildred died around 1802. I find that inventory of the estate of William Grimes d.1795 Elbert stops around 1798. William Grimes son is seen as Gdn on returns of William GRIMES, Thomas M. Grimes returns, these continue up until 1808. Thomas M. Grimes married in 1809. No more returns on Patsy Grimes, Johnathon WILHITE gdn seem to stop before this as well. The fact is, those 2 would not need guardians if their parents were living. This is why we see different exec's on the William GRIMES Estate (d.1795) and why the estate was still that of William Grimes and not that of Mildred because the children were left the property and she was given rights to live on either of her husband's property, presumably with their children until they came of age and she would be taken care of by them unless she remarried. I do not think that took place, have not seen anything on her during this time frame nor after.
I have been trying to discern when Polly WILHITE married William GRIMES and I found that her brother Philip was in Jackson County GA 1798 and 2 daughters of Philip Wilhite of NC were married prior to 1800 according to the NC census, one was RHODA and the other must've been Polly as according to Gabriel's bdate of 1799-1800 and according to the 1820 Jackson county census, there was another son born during the 1794-1804 time frame, probably older, but not by much. This older son is never seen in or around this area doing business or on census, it could have been a nephew or some other relative but if it was a son of Willim and Polly, he could not have been born any earlier than 1797 as she would be too old having children in 1812 when Washington was born or 1815 when a daughter could have been last born. William was probably only 18-21 yrs around 1796, probably the reason his father stressed "when my son turns 21" in the will. Since he came to be gdn of his brother Thomas in 1802 proves he was 21 by then and also selling the land that he recieved when he turned 21 by then.
Polly probably came to GA from NC with her brother when he moved as she was unmarried and probably about 25-30 yrs old, considered a SPINSTER and then met William GRIMES. Of course these Grimes were living in VA and probably came to GA about the same time as the Wilhite brothers did. He probably, already knowing the Wilhites, met and married in Jackson county GA, and that is the first census where I find my William GRIMES family. He appears to have died by 1830, the last time I see him on any documentation, he was in Madison as juror with sons Gabriel and William and it appears that Polly is on that census as well, over 45. She may have died prior to 1840 as Gabriel and William brothers, were living in Oglethorpe county ga, William married by then with wife and Gabriel single, living alone, they may have not moved to Oglethorpe but possibly got caught in the border change in 1831. Need to check Washington GRIMES household in Madison 1830 to be sure and daughters household if still living.
Polly WILHITE, daughter of Phillip WIlhite (WILHEIT) of Franklin County NC. Phillip left will 1801 Franklin County, NC, previous Granville County, NC Wilhite Line-Click on Conrad Wilhite Polly's father, Phillip Wilhoit, b. ca 1725; m. 1746 Rachel _____. b. ca 1727; Phillip and wife Rachel sold land, devised to said Phillip by his father Michael Wilheidt, to Adam Wayland on March 16,1756 (Culpepper Co. Book B., pg. 425). This was the last mention of him in Virginia, so we assume that he emigrated to Grandville Co, NC for we find he was granted land on Sandy Creek, May 1, 1761 (now Franklin Co.) Phillip made his will March 6, 1801 which was probated the same year in Franklin, NC. WILHITE Site LIsts children in will
Polly GRIMES was named in Phillips will.
Polly and William Grimes found in Ogelthorpe County, GA 1802, deeding land. I have not found a will or estate records for either of them however, William Grimes b 1775 was not on the 1830 Madison County GA census with family and whom I believe to be Polly, is not on the 1840 in Gabriel's nor William and Olive's household in Oglethorpe County, GA leading me to believe they had died prior to those census enumerations.
