Fuled by the aggressive energies of the dark side of the Force, the Sith Order began almost 2,000 years ago by a renegade Jedi Knight who sought to use the Force to gain control of the galaxy. Both strenghthened and twisted by the dark side, the Sith fought against each other to gain power and domination until only one remained: Darth Bane.
To prevent interecine strife, Bane remade the Sith as an order that would endure in only 2 individuals at a time. Biding their time, the Sith lay in wait for the right moment to overturn the Jedi and seize control of the galaxy.
Darth Sidious, the Sith Master at a dark time for the Republic, began his plan to disarm the Jedi at a time when corruption ruled the galactic government. He was in a position to insert his dark power into the Republic because he was in also fact Senator Palpatine of the planet of Naboo.
Though his Sith apprentice, Darth Maul was defeated and killed by the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, through his manipulation and control, he manged to get even more power as being elected as Supreme Chancellor of the Republic.
Then mastering his treachery in the Clone Wars brought down the Republic and the Jedi Knights, he quickly moved in for the kill. He seduced the "Chosen One", Anakin Skywalker to the dark side of the Force, then Skywalker, now Darth Vader, helped Palpatine (Sidious) hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. Then 20 years later he and Vader tried to lure Vader's son, Luke, to the dark side but with no avail.
Luke believed good was still in his father and refused to be converted to the dark side. Then as Palpatine (Sidious) attempted to eliminate Luke, Darth Vader, turning back to the light side of the Force and returning to his true self, Anakin Skywalker, hurled the Palpatine (Sidious) into the Death Star reactor, destroying not only Palpatine (Sidious), but also the Sith Order altogether along with the evil Galactic Empire.
