Chapter 4: Phone Call Cover Up

Gabriel shoved her key into the deadbolt of her front door. She shook a little from the light breeze that blew through the air. She turned the key and stepped into her warm house, closing and locking the door behind her.

She carefully peeled her jacket off and hung it over the back of the dining room chair and deposited her keys on the table. She could hear the T.V blaring in the den. She shook her head as she kicked off her shoes. Mom was waiting up for her.

She padded into the den and found her mother sound asleep on the couch in her work clothes. An empty dinner plate was on the end table. Gabbie sighed and grabbed the plate so that she could put it in the dishwasher. Sometimes, it felt like she was the mom. She grabbed a quilt and placed it over her mother when she returned to the den. She watched her mother sleep and for a moment, she was content. She then realized that she too, was tired. She turned off the T.V and dragged herself into her room.

As she got ready for bed, she wondered if the hospital had called while she had been out with Ike, Tay and Zac. She wasn't so curious that she would wake her mother from a must needed sleep though. Besides, she could happily live a normal life another day until she knew.

The sun beamed through the window and was seemingly aimed right at Gabriel's face. She groaned and pulled her blankets up around her ears. She was at such a loss of energy and all she wanted was sleep.

She closed her eyes and attempted to pick up where she had left off in her dream. It wasn't working. She groaned and pushed the covers away from her face to view her alarm clock. One-thirty in the afternoon. She blinked a few times to comprehend the time. How did she sleep that long? She yawned and sat up.

She somehow made her way into the kitchen for breakfast, or what would actually be considered lunch. She perused the note that her mother had left her as she poured a glass of milk. Home late tonight...start dinner...we need to talk...hospital called...call if you go out...mom.

She shrugged off the part about the hospital calling. Her mom didn't seem to concerned in the note she left, so why should she be? Did she say what was wrong in the note though? Gabby realized she hadn't read quite that carefully. She picked it up and stared at the bland words written in her mothers delicate cursive writting. Nope, no problem in the note.

The phone suddenely rang, shattering the silence in the house. Gabriel sprinted over to the kitchen phone,"Hello?"

"Hey Gabriel." Isaac's voice sounded through the reciever.

Gabriel scratched the back of her head,"Oh, hey Ike. What's up?"

Isaac sighed heavily,"Everything is up."

Gabbie leaned against the wall,"Such as?" she questioned.

"My family is sending me to the nut house on a one-way ticket." he lammented.

Gabbie snickered,"Going crazy huh? Can I come?" she joked.

"Very funny." Ike said pitifully, although Gabbie could almost see his face brighten up,"Can I come over so I can get out of here?" he asked.

"Sure, no problem." Gabriel agreed.

Isaac threw his shoes on and then went in search of his jacket. Where had he put it? Taylor entered the room slowly,"Hey Ike?" he asked.

"Hmm?" Isaac grunted as he tossed a few shirts around on the floor, looking under them for his jacket.

"Do you wanna hang out and do something? I'm really bored right now." Taylor whined.

"I can't Tay, I'm going to Gabbie's." Isaac informed him.

Taylor sauntered further into the room,"Gabbie's?" he squeaked.

Isaac paused in his hunt for his jacket and glanced up at Tay,"Yeah. Gabriel Green. Ya know, Gabbie?" he asked sarcastically.

"I know," Taylor shot back and then was quiet for a moment,"Do you think, maybe, I could go with you?" he asked quietly.

Isaac raised his left eyebrow almost up to his hairline as he stared oddly at Taylor,"Why?" he asked finally.

Taylor shrugged,"Like I said, I'm bored. Besides, I don't think Gabbie would mind too much. I mean, you're not the only Hanson that is friends with her."

Isaac's face set in a frown and his eyebrow returned to normal position,"I know that but...ugh nevermind. Go and get your jacket." he said realizing that it was pointless to start an arguement over nothing special.

"So, are you guys thirsty or something?" Gabriel offered as she grabbed a bottle of Surge from the fridge.

Isaac and Taylor both nodded eagerly and in unision with grunts of acception. Gabbie giggled,"Are you two related? Cause you sure don't act like it." she cracked.

Issac smiled,"Nope, I'm not related to this...thing over here. It just kind of follows me around sometimes, it gets annoying."

Taylor scowled,"Yeah right. I have better things to do with my time than follow you around."

"Such as?" Isaac challenged.

"Well, um there's always, I could, sometimes I..."he stumbled over his words.

Isaac nodded,"Sure Tay, uh huh. Sounds interesting. Invite me along sometime when you do whatever it is that you do." he poked fun at him.

Gabbie snickered as Taylor turned red and tried to look absorbed in the papers lying on the kitchen table. Brotherly love she thought as she handed Isaac his glass of Surge.

"Hey Gabbie," Tay said as he took his glass from her,"what does this mean when it says 'hospital called'?" he asked pointing to the note her mother left.

Gabbie's eyes widened and she snatched the note off of the table,"Oh, um nothing important. I decided to donate blood for the blood drive at church so I uh, guess it must be ok or something like that." she lied.

"You never told me you gave blood for the church." Isaac interjected into her excuse.

"Oh I didn't? I could have sworn I mentioned it." she fidgeted under the glares of the two,"Excuse me while I use the bathroom." she muttered before ducking out of the room.

Isaac snickered,"That's weird huh?" he asked Tay,"She hates needles, why would she give blood?"

Taylor furrowed his brow,"There's no blood drive at our church." he told Isaac.
