Read this Scenario First

  

Materials-(for each lab group)

One 8" aluminum pie pan

Clear plastic wrap

Flat black spray paint

Celsius thermometer

Water (500 ml)

Measuring cup

Procedure

PRE-EXPERIMENT
Spray paint the pie tin and allow it to dry overnight.
To ensure accurate results, outside air and water temperature should be the same. This can be achieved by placing your water supply outside in the shade, first thing in the morning.

        1. Place tin outside in an area exposed to the sun.
        2. Fill tin with 500 ml of water.
        3. Place the thermometer into the pan. Do not allow the bulb to touch the pan. (Click here for conversion chart)
        4. Read and record the air and water temperature in Celsius at the start of the experiment.
        (Between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM)

*WARNING* Water  can get very hot! Be careful!

    Submit your data direct to an online form.

  1. *Optional Shadow stick - measure and record the angle of the sun at the start time.
    Read and record the air and water temperature in Celsius at the end of the experiment.
    (Between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM)

    *Optional Shadow stick - measure and record the angle of the sun at the end time.

    5. Calculate change in temperature over time. Record on your chart.
    6. Determine the number of calories produced. Record on your chart.
    7. Respond to the questions.
    8. Submit data and responses. (one set per school)
    9. After 5/1/00 analyze the posted results and submit a final report
