My Tribute to Y2K

As a Peace Elder, perhaps I look towards the coming of a millennium with a different propective than most. The past thousand years have been the most destructive in regards to human endevours toward both Earth and its inhabitants, including themselves, ever recorded.

Perhaps it would behoove us, as Elders to speak to the conscience of those who begin this new millennium, so that the lessons we have endured at such high cost might bring about a lasting Peace.

I hope that this Story may stir a few minds away from their video games and TV's long enough to think about the future which will be in their hands.

THE ROBIN'S EGG

The old man stood with tearstained eyes beside the grave of his grandchild. The bitter memories of helplessly watching that tiny disease racked child slowly slipping away were like an unhealed festering sore within his heart. Suddenly the agony he felt turned to anger, and he lifted his tear stained face heavenward and shook his fist.

"God! How could you allow this to be?" He screamed, "Why could you not take this worthless life instead of that young innocent? What kind of God are you?"

Slowly before his eyes a shimmering haze formed, like the heat rising from the desert sands. Within the haze appeared a figure just out of seeing. A figure of unimaginable power, whose very presence shook the old man with awe.

"WHY DO YOU BLAME ME? IT WAS YOU WHO BROKE THE ROBIN'S EGG!" The Voice flowed filling the old man's being.

"Wh..What?" Stammered the old man, "What do you mean I broke the Robin's egg?"

Slowly a scene formed itself in the old man's mind. He saw a young child being scolded by his Mother. It was His Mother! And he saw that He was that child. His Mother was telling him to stay away from the Robin's nest. Next he saw the young child climbing the tree to look into the nest despite his Mother's warning. He saw himself picking up one of the bright blue eggs. Then he saw himself carelessly dropping it so that it broke on the ground. It was a scene so insignificant to his mind that he had not retained it in his memory. Only with it's replay was the event remembered at all.

"B..But what has my breaking that egg have to do with the taking of my Grandchild's life?" Stammered the old man.

"THAT EGG CONTAINED THE UNBORN BODY OF A YOUNG ROBIN, WHO IF ALLOWED TO LIVE WOULD HAVE EATEN THE INSECT WHICH CARRIED THE GERMS WHICH CAUSED A DESEASE THAT KILLED A YOUNG CHILD.

A YOUNG CHILD WHO HAD HE LIVED WOULD HAVE BECOME A DOCTOR. AS A DOCTOR, HE WOULD HAVE FOUND A CURE FOR THE DESEASE THAT KILLED YOUR GRANDCHILD AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS." Explained the Great Voice.

"B..But couldn't you have just sent another bird to do that chore?" Asked the old man.

"YES! I COULD HAVE." Replied the Great Voice, "HAD I SEEN ANY REMORSE OR CARING FOR THAT DEED. BUT IF YOU DIDN'T CARE, WHY SHOULD I? LIFE IS A CIRCLE. WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND!"

And the old man hung his head in shame...

Blue Turtle

As you see by this story, even the smallest of things can make a difference.

Just think what this world might have been if so many people hadn't of lost their lives during the many wars.

Think of all those unshared gifts that those many could have contributed

Think of all the man hours, and all the resources, wasted in war, that could have contributed to a lasting world peace.

It is not impossible to imagine the total elimination of hunger or need worldwide. If Only!

But it wasn't. But now begins a new millennium. Perhaps we may still have an opportunity to learn.

It will not come in my lifetime. But can become in yours.

But then, that is up to you. All I can do is talk to your conscience, whether or not you respond to that stimulant is up to you.
