Kira's Canis Forest

Kira wandered up the mountain path, Rubiah, her brown fennec, trotting alongside her. She had left the fennec dunes two days ago, finally feeling up to her full health. Rubiah suddenly began to growl, running ahead of Kira and sniffing violently at a cave that was overgrown with ferns.

Kira knelt down beside the fennec and pulled some of the plant life from the cave's entrance, then peered inside. She heard soft whimpering sounds and cautiously entered, crawling on her hands and knees, Rubiah following close behind.

She came to a somewhat large cavern and saw, lying off to the left, the white form of a wolven creature. She slowly approached it and saw that it was injured, whatever it was. I am a Canis. Kira jumped at the soft male voice in her head and turned to see shining black eyes reguarding her steadily from an snowy white coat. My name is...ah!...Alemi...please, help me...

Kira knelt beside the canis, who held out his front leg for her to see. It was split in two places, and bleeding freely. "What happened?" I...I got caught in a trap set out by hunters... Kira frowned and wished Sebak, the clan healer of the fennecs, were here to help. She looked at Rubiah, who was licking Alemi's face reassuringly. Alemi looked at her, his eyes shining with hope. Can you fix it? "I can try..."

Kira worked on setting the broken bones, Rubiah helping whenever she could. In the end, Kira ended up using a thick stick and pieces of her shirt as a splint. Alemi stood with her assistance and smiled in a canine fashion at her. Thank you. I shall never forget you. With that, he limped down a tunnel before Kira could stop him.

It had been almost two weeks since Kira's encounter with Alemi. Her and Rubiah had made it half way through the thick chain of mountains that bordered the Fennec Dunes. It was on the brink of nightfall when they encountered another, less friendly canis.

Kira and Rubiah were sharing dinner by the firelight; Rubiah sharing her small animal kills and Kira sharing the more edible berries she had gathered on their walk. Drawn by the smells of cooking meat, a canis, black as night, circled their camp fire, staying in the shadows. He attacked swiftly, leaping over the flames and striking Kira in the chest. He put is wieght onto her ribs until one made an audiable crack, and kicked Rubiah with a back leg as the fennec tried to attack his behind. Suddenly, there was a flash of white, and the black canis was knocked from Kira's chest and into a tree.

Alemi bared fierce ivory teeth and barked threateningly at the smaller black, who growled in return, ribs poking through his thin coat. The black was distraught from the collision with the tree, and not wanting this much trouble over a meal, soon slinked off into the forest, defeated. Alemi lowered his defenses and trotted over to Kira, who still lay on the ground, cringing in pain.

"You...you saved me," she muttered through clenched teeth. I returned the favour, was Alemi's simple reply. He gently nuzzled her side, right where the black canis had cracked her rib. It's not broken. It only feels that way. "Ya...well...it hurts like hell..." Alemi nodded sympathetically and placed his head lightly upon the place of pain. "Hey...that helps..." The white canis gave her his smile again as Rubiah crawled back to the clearing from wherever she had been kicked during the black canis' attack. She lay her head on the other side of Kira, watching the canis wearily. "Well...at least I have some friends out here..."

Kira wandered back through the mountaints, her countless friends trotting alongside her or drifting above. Suddenly, something dark as night darted out across her path. Alemi lept in front of her, growling protectivly, the fur about his neck standing on end. The black thing paused to look at her and she reconized it immediatly as the starved canis that had attacked her then night she had met Alemi. Please.....I mean you...no harm. My name is...Suricu... said a soft, ragged voice in Kira's mind.

Kira stepped out from behind Alemi and kneeled before the weak canis, who nudged her arm gentley and whimpered. Do not trust him! growled Alemi, bearing his teeth and prying Suricu away from her. "No..Alemi, don't. He's telling the truth..." The white canis glanced warningly at her, but backed away. Suricu placed his head in Kira's lap as she gentley stroked his grizzled head. When I attacked you before...I was so hungry. But please, can I come with you now? Kira paused, then nodded. "Of course you may."

General Canis Information: There are 6 different colors of Canises: black, white, grey, brown, tawny brownish, and forest green. They don't have seperate personalities for the colors, and they don't have any special powers. Canises are basically guardians, hunters, and all-around house pets. They can be trained for different things, much like dogs nowadays. Canises eat basically anything you give them, and if you don't give them food they seek it elsewhere. In the wild they eat taeka and (don't freak out now) the occasional ganra. They sometimes eat grass to balance things out. The main region they live in is forests like in the Rocky Mountains regions.
