The Narfig Dunes

Kira found herself wandering through a plain of dune grasses and dry land. Myree, her green Lyris, was trotting with ease at her side. Kira glanced at her watch, which read 1:47 p.m. "Great," mumbled Kira. "The hottest part of the day is about to begin..." Myree looked sympathetically up at her mistriss, for she did not notice the heat through her coat, which worked like an air conditioner in the heat. Suddenly, the Lyris stopped her easy pace and barked off to the left. Kira sighed and glanced down at her friend. "Myree, I don't have time to play with you...I've gotta find some shade..." Myree ignored her and dashed off into the dune grasses. Kira rolled her eyes and jogged after her, not knowing what to expect.

She entered a clearing that was completely in the shade of a large tree, and Kira almost collapsed with relief. She found Myree circling a nest of various coloured eggs, and Kira knelt down beside her friend. "Lyran don't clutch in plains too do they?" Kira suddenly felt fear in the pit of her stomach, for she didn't want to have to face an angry Lyris mother. Myree didn't reply, but continued circling the nest. A growl came from a clump of dune grass. Kira slowly stood, legs already beginning to tremble. Suddenly, a streak of yellow leaped from the grass and onto Kira, knocking her down.

Kira felt a warm tongue on her cheek and mumbled, "Myree! This isn't the time for kisses..." but as she opened her eyes she saw two sparkling black eyes set in a furry pale yellow face. The creature backed off of her, and Kira had to giggle at its appearence. Why, it looked like a dog with pigtails! The animal took insult from her laughter and with a doggish 'humph' turned its back to her. "Aww...I'm sorry...Myree, tell it I'm sorry." The Lyris relayed the message, and apparently the animal accepted the apology for she (Myree informed Kira that it was indeed a she of a species called Narfigs) began sorting through her nest of eggs.

The Narfig says she will give you one of her eggs, if you don't laugh at it. Kira's jaw dropped in disbelief. Why, it had only been two or three days since the Lyris mother had given her Myree's egg. And now another? But...how could she refuse? Kira nodded enthusiastically to the Narfig mother, who yipped happily and pushed a glistening rainbow egg from the sand and to Kira's feet. Kira picked up the gift and smiled at the shimmering colours. The Narfig says that it is a suprise egg; she doesn't know what colour it is unlike the rest of her clutch. Kira smiled her thanks to the Narfig. "Forgive me, but I must be leaving. Thank you for the egg! I will bring him or her to visit you when they hatch!"

Kira slept peacefully in her room, Myree curled up on her feet. The Narfig egg she had gotten the week before was wrapped securely in warm blankets on her left side; the pyrofaerie egg on her right. Suddenly, the Narfig egg began to rock. Myree awoke and began pawing her caretaker's side, whining anxiously. Kira awoke and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "What is it Myree?" I think the Narfig egg is hatching... "What?!"

Kira sat up and looked over at the sparkling rainbow egg, which by now was in danger of rolling right off the bed. Kira picked it up just as a crack formed on the side. In moments, the egg shattered into glistening pieces, and Kira held a pastal green body, which looked up at her intently with sparkling black eyes. It shook the egg fluid off of its fur and began nuzzling Kira's stunned hand, whimpering for food.

About an hour later, the Narfig was asleep in Kira's lap with a belly full of warm milk. Myree sniffed it curiously, then asked, What're you gonna name her? Kira looked thoughtful. "I think I'll name her...Clover." She smiled and nodded. "Yes, Clover." As if satisfied with the name, the little Narfig licked Kira's hand, though it was still asleep. Kira smiled at it, then drifted to sleep as well.

Clover pounced Kira awake two days after her hatching, a frisky adult Narfig already. Kira laughed, despite her fatigue, and stroked the energetic puppy-like creature. Myree rolled over and mumbled to Kira, I'm still a cub and I'm not that hyper. What excuse does Clover have? Kira grinned and sat up, glancing at the clock, which read 5:36 a.m. "Clover...it's a bit early to be playing isn't it?" The Narfig yipped in dissagreement and tugged the blankets off of Kira and out from under Myree, sending the Lyris tumbling off the bed.

Myree growled defensivly at the Narfig, sending the playful critter into a whimper fit, hiding behind her owner. Kira rolled her eyes and scooped Clover into her arms, then got out of bed. "Honestly you two. Behave or niether of you are going to get fed today." Myree stopped her growling and Clover her whimpering. "That's better."

Kira dressed swiftly, then quietly made her way outside, Clover bounding alongside her, Myree dragging herself behind the human. Do we HAVE to be out walking? Something tells me this isn't a descent time... Kira looked over her shoulder at the straggling Lyris. "You can always go back and sleep..." Myree, torn between fatigue and loyalness to her mistriss, 'humphed' and picked up her pace.

The trio made their way to a small pond just outside of Kira's country home, where Clover stopped to watch the large koi swim in hungry formations, trying to get at the food Kira dropped onto the surface. Myree curled up at her mistriss' feet as the girl finally collapsed on a fallen log from exhaustion. Clover ran to hide in a clump of tall grass, in the mood for hide and seek.

Kira fell into a light doze in the sunlight, Myree joining her, leaving Clover hiding longer then she wanted to. She poked her head above the grass and spotted the sleeping couple. She growled in irritation, then ran to join them, not one to be left out. Kira subcontiously layed a hand on Clover's head as she curled up on her lap, content in the fullest.
