Lyris Den

Kira looked up through the thick canopy of tree branchs at the darkening sky. She really shouldn't have gone off on her own...after all, this was an uncharted forest. Who knew what could be prowelling around through the bushs? She shivered against a sudden chilling wind and pulled her windbreaker closer to her body. Suddenly, a shadow ran across her path. She stopped walking and said in a shaky voice, "Who's there?" There was no reply.

Kira walked faster now, eyeing every movement around her suspiciously. A branch snapped behind her. She repeated her question, her voice a bit steadier. "Who's there? I'm warning you, I know kung-fu!" Still no reply. Kira supressed a scream as she ran into a spider web, and with disgust pulled the silvery, sticky threads out of her hair. There was a low growl behind her.

She slowly turned around to face two glowing eyes. "W-what are you?" The eyes moved closer, and a massive furred head was seen in the moonlight. I'm a Lyris. What are you doing in my territory? Kira took a step backward from the wolven creature. "I..I got lost. I didn't know I was trespassing..." The Lyris walked towards her. Do not worry child. I will not harm you, unless you are here to harm me or my pack... "No! I would never do anything of the sort!" The Lyris made a noise equivilent to a chuckle. Yes, you speak true. Come. I believe you would make a good caretaker for one of my young.

The Lyris lead Kira through the dense forest to a small, secluded cave, then dissapeared inside. "Excuse me? Mrs. Lyris? I can't get in that openin-" Do not worry about it child. I will push and egg out to you. But be sure to catch it! Within moments, a blue speckled egg was rolled out of the narrow opening and into Kira's waiting hands. She cradled the egg in her arms. "It's so beautiful..." The Lyris mother's head appeared out the opening. Be careful with my child. You may name him/her as you wish, but you must promise to take good care of it! Kira looked up from the precious egg. "Oh, I promise with all my heart." The Lyris nodded. Then good bye to you my friend. My pack members will lead you safely out of the forest. "Thank you, um, m'am." The Lyris nodded and several pairs of glowing eyes appeared about the den. "I shall never forget you!"

Kira sat in her room, reading her favourite book. She glanced across the room at her Lyris egg, which rested in a bed she had bought from Cypris. Around it lay other scattered items she had purchased for when her beautiful egg hatched.

She smiled and felt excitement stir in her stomach. Kira just couldn't wait for little Myree (what she planned to name her Lyris) to hatch!

Kira slept peacefully in her bed, then suddenly she was rudely awaken from her dreams by a sharp crack. She sat straight up in her bed and her sleepy gaze came to her Lyris egg, which had a large split down the side. It was hatching! She leapt from the bed and to the egg just in time. The shell burst into a hundred fragments and a tiny, green Lyris lay there.

Kira reached a shaking hand towards the cub, fearing that it was still-born, but as her fingers touched the silky coat it opened its eyes and began mewing for food. Kira found a bottle and quickly filled it with milk, then offered it to the cub. She attacked the bottle with a lot of energy for a newborn. Kira smiled and cradled little Myree in her arms while she suckled to bottle, then fell asleep.

Myree ran full speed at the shining blue ball that Kira rolled across the ground for her. She pounced upon it and slipped across the floor into the side of Kira's bed. Kira giggled as the confused cub backed away from it and asked her caretaker, Why do you get to sleep in a big bed so high of the floor and I have to sleep in a little cat bed? Kira smiled at stroked Myree's head. "You can sleep in my bed with me if you want, just as long as you aren't too violent a sleeper."

Myree squirmed into Kira's lap and licked her cheek, bringing giggles from her. "Oh Myree, do you have to do that?"

Kira awoke to bright morning light in her eye. She groaned and reached blindly for the shade, accidently kicking the sleeping Myree who had grown into a beautiful sub-adult. The Lyris awoke and glared with annoyance at her mistriss, then leaped gracefully from the bed to lay in the smaller bed Kira had bought for her so long ago.

Kira was slightly hurt by the normally friendly Lyris's behaviour. Myree had slept at her feet since she had hatched. Why now the change? Myree lifted her green head and replied stubbornly, I'm growing up. Kira frowned to herself. "But Myree..." The Lyris turned away from her and went to sleep. Kira pulled the blankets tightly around herself, already missing the warm lump on her feet.

Later that day, Kira was working outside her house in their small vegetable garden. Her Narfig, Clover, and PyroFaerie, Naelis, were in attendance, helping plant some of the ripe vegetables. Kira wiped some sweat from her brow, still concerned about Myree's behaviour. Clover, sensing her distriss, nuzzled her side lightly and whimpered. Naelis came to land on her shoulder, peering at her inquireingly. "Y'know, you shouldn't be so worried about Myree. She'll grow out of it. She's technically a teenager now isn't she?" asked Naelis.

Kira nodded to the PyroFaerie, looking a bit thoughtful. "I...well...yes, but you didn't see the look she gave me when I accidently kicked her...before if that happened she'd only attack my feet, then go back to sleep." Naelis sat down, looking up at her still, and she felt he was going to get into one of his famous speeches. "But she was a cub then. Nobody stays a cub forever. She still loves you, but she's not as willing to show it. Myree's as intelligent as you or me, so she goes through emotional changes as well as physical. Regular canine creatures do not. Take Clover for example," he gestured to the green dog-like creature who was digging a hole in the soft tilled earth, "She changed so quickly from cub to adult that she still has the same attitude as a cub."

Naelis patted her on the shoulder. "Don't worry yourself about Myree. She'll become a loyal Lyris again in no time." Kira sighed deeply, then nodded with a smile at Naelis. "You always know how to make me feel better Nael." The faerie stood then. "That's what I'm here for." That was a nice analyisis he gave, said a sleepy voice to Kira. The girl searched the garden and then saw Myree reguarding her steadily from behind the tall weeds that bordered the garden.

Kira sighed and returned the look given by the Lyris. "If you're not going to help..." Myree stood then, glaring slightly at her mistriss. Then I'll leave, she grumbled and with a swish of her tail left the garden for the shade of the big willow in Kira's front yard. Kira turned back to Naelis. "She better grow out of it soon..."

Clover dodged to the left as Kira flunt dirt from her shovel, then helped her pull some potatoes from the ground. It was late fall, and high time the produce of Kira's labour be harvested. Naelis was busy with the cherry tomatoes; plucking them one by one from the plant and depositing them carefully in the basket at Kira's side. Myree, now a gorgeous, lean, intelligent adult, was rolling pumpkins from their vine to Kira's side.

Kira stopped for a minute, resting her foot on her pitch fork and wiping sweat from her brow. Myree sat down beside her, watching the other two work. Kira removed the stained glove from her hand and ran her fingers through Myree's thick mane of fur that encircled the lyris' head. What are you thinking about? inquired Myree, her telepathic voice now smooth and almost musical with maturity. "Oh...just stuff," was Kira's less then inteligent response. Myree smiled up at her. It's time we get back to work, don't you think? Kira rolled her eyes and nodded, digging the pitch fork deep into the earth and overturning more potatoes.

"Smile!" Myree, Clover, and Naelis gave thier individual grins, seated beside their proudly carved pumpkins (or in Naelis' case, guord) as Kira snapped a picture of them. Clover was dressed for Halloween as the clown she was, Naelis as a pirate, and Myree as herself (for that was unsual enough). Kira herself was dressed as a sorceress, wearing a long silken white wig, a black gown, and velvet-purple cloak. They weren't trick-or-treating, but rather greeting the guests who came to Kira's doorstep.

The first guests arrived, two little mermaids and a fairy, who were delighted at the site of the unsual animals in costume. They asked Kira (or The Mystical Kiara) what Myree was dressed as. "A lyris," was Kiara's reply, trying not to grin at their confusion. It had been a long year, Kira reflected to herself, but a good one nonetheless, spent with new friends and, of course, her one-of-a-kind lyris, Myree.
