"I just abandoned my body. I still live here..." This is an email message sent to Lain by a dead girl, a classmate of Lain's, who recently committed suicide. This is how the first volume of this science fiction animation begins. We are introduced to the "real" world where Lain physically dwells. It is a world where she knew is governed by her five senses. However, what she thinks is real turned upside down when she received that bizarre email message and she begins experiencing the world of the wired. |

In this second volume, Lain confronts a group of hackers by the name of Knights, in order to find the reason for her classmate's suicide. In this confrontation, she discovered that this powerful group controls all information distribution in the wired reality and this group has its own agenda with Lain. Back in the physical reality, a mysterious group of men in black suits appeared in front of her house. They asked her, "Who are you really?" and "Are you the Lain of the Wired?" And Lain is once again thrown into confusion. |

Lain of the physical reality finally meets her alter ego in the wired world in volume three. She discovered a startling realization, that her family and friends are only parts of her illusions and that even the physical world may only be part of this ultimate reality of the wired. The only way that she can find her true self is to return to the wired world. It is there that she meets a strange man who may be able to answer her question, "Which is the real me?" She emerged from this encounter even more perplexed, as this strange man believes that he is the God of the wired world. |

In this final volume, Lain must confront this strange man who she now believes to be the Creator or the God of the wired world. In this final battle, she destroys her Creator. In his destruction, Lain becomes the controller and the manipulator of the wired world and ultimately, she controls the physical world. However, in order to restore the physical world back to the way it was, she must decide whether she should delete herself from the wired reality and reset everyone's consciousness. Yet if she deletes her existence from everyone's memories, it may mean that she has never existed at all. |
