Liberty Silver, is a Canadian singer/songwriter based in Toronto, Ontario. Liberty (her given name) was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1962 but was adopted into an Ontario family, where she spent her youth in Kingston then Peterborough. Liberty made her professional singing debut at age 12, when she opened for reggae legend, Bob Marley, at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. She was a contestant for seven weeks on the popular TV show, Star Search, has pursued a number of musical genres, with a particular emphasis on jazz and neo-soul, and is renowned for her six-plus octave range. In 1985 Liberty was awarded two Juno Awards (Canada's Grammy) one for Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year Lost Somewhere Inside Your Love and the other for Best Reggae/Calypso Recording Heaven Must Have Sent You with Otis Gayle. The same year Liberty was featured on Canada's version of USA For Africa, Northern Lights, on the song Tears Are Not Enough, where she sang a part with Loverboy's Mike Reno. In 1995, Liberty was Jazz Report’s Female Jazz Singer of the Year. Her 1999 song, Love’s Eternity Gate, went double platinum and won 5 Black Music Awards, and in 2005, she received the ACAA, for Arts and Entertainment. Liberty co-wrote the themes for the Atlanta and the Athens Olympics Games; has opened for BB King, the Temptations and Harry Belafonte; and has performed or collaborated with Eddie Bullen, David Foster, Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell and many others. In 2005, she released the album, At Last. Her latest and highly-anticipated album, Groove Symphony was released in December 2010. |

In 1988 Liberty released the album Private Property, featured in full on this page, with the singles I Do Love You and Private Property also released as videos for tv. Private Property is a funky pop album, very of the time, and a cut above a lot of similar albums released at the time. She released two more singles from the album, a remake of The Shirelles Baby It's You and the ballad Let It Begin Tonight. Although following this she didn't stay in the pop spotlight, she remained a fixture in the Canadian music scene and has been nominated and won many awards since. She has also continued to release albums, focusing mostly on jazz.
In addition to the Juno awards Liberty's accolades include: 5 Black Music Awards, 3 Rock Express Awards, the Shuremic Award for Vocals, the Bob Marley Memorial Award, the Chin International Songwriting Award (where Liberty performed songs in Italian), The Michigan State Music Competition, 3 Genie Nominations for Acting, Jazz Reports, Top Female Jazz Singer Award, and most recently received The 2005 African Achievement Award for Arts and Entertainment. |

In the mid 80's it was quite easy for me to get to Toronto where Liberty was performing regularly in the Yorkville area night clubs. I recall seeing her on a revolving stage at Ontario Place one warm summer night. A big, bold, beautiful, green eyed woman with a soaring voice she lit up and dominated the room. I have an autographed copy of Private Property that I uploaded for the playlist. Private Property, the album, begins with the second track in the playlist, I Do Love You and is sequential through to the last track I Knew it Was You. My favorite tune is Oh No because it makes me laugh. Got me saying no, oh no, no, no... Please do enjoy the songs of Liberty Silver and memories of the 80's as much as I have while making it.
