THE LITURGY
OF SAINT GREGORY



THE PRAYES AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR

When the priest, having vested, approaches the Altar, he makes the due reverence, and signs himself with the sign of the cross from forehead to breast, and says in a clear voice:

In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Then with hands joined before his breast, he begins the Antiphon:

Introibo ad altare Dei.

The ministers respond:

Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam.

Then, alternately with the Ministers, he says the following:

Judica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo et doloso erue me.

M.
Quia tu es, Deus, fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

P.
Emitte lucem tuam et veritatem tuam: ipsa me deduxerunt et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum, et in tabernacula tua.

M.
Et introibo ad altare Dei: ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam.

P.
Confitebor tibi in cithara, Deus, Deus meus: quare tristis es anima mea, et quare conturbas me?

M.
Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confi tebor illi: salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus.

He signs himself saying:

Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domine.

Qui fecit caelum et terram.

Then with hands joined, bowing profoundly, he makes the Confession.

¶ In Masses of the Dead, and in Masses of the Season from Passion Sunday to Holy Saturday exclusive, the Psalm Give sentence is omitted, with Glory be to the Father, and the repetition of the Antiphon; but In the name of the Father, I will go, and Our help having been said, the Confession is made as follows:

THE CONFITEOR

Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Joanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et te fratres: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione verbo, et opere: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelem Archangelum, beatum Joannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et te fratres, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum Nostrum.

The Ministers respond:

Misereatur tui omnipotens Deus, et dismissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam aeternam.

P.
Amen.

He stands erect, and the Ministers repeat the Confession: and where you, brethren was said by the Priest, there is said by the Ministers thee, father.

Then the Priest, with joined hands, makes the absolution saying:

Misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus, et dismissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam aeternam.

R.
Amen.

He signs himself with the sign of the cross, saying:

Indulgentiam, absolutionem, et remissionem peccatorum nostrorum tribuat nobis omnipotens et misericors Dominus.

And bowing he proceeds:

V.
Deus, tu conversus vivificabis nos.

R.
Et plebs tua laetabitur in te.

V.
Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam.

R.
Et salutare tuum da nobis.

V.
Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

R.
Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

And extending and joining his hands, he says in a clear voice:

Oremus.

and ascending to the Altar, says secretly:

Aufer a nobis, quaesumus, Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Then, with hands joined upon the Altar, he says, bowing:

Oramus te. Domine, per merita Sanc torum tuorum, quorum reliquiae hic sunt, et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen.

THE INTROIT

¶ At solemn Mass the Celebrant, before he reads the Introit, blesses incense saying: Be thou + blessed by him in whose honour thou shalt be burned. Amen. And receiving the thurible from the deacon, he censes the Altar saying nothing. Then the deacon takes the thurible from the Celebrant and censes him only. Then the Celebrant, signing himself with the sign of the cross, begins the Introit: which ended, with joined hands he says alternately with the Ministers:

THE GLORIA

Then in the midst of the Altar he extends and joins his hands, and bowing his head a little, says, if it is to be said, Gloria in excelsis Deo and continues with joined hands. When he says We worship thee, We give thanks unto thee, Jesu Christ, and Receive our prayer, he bows his head; and at the end, saying, With the Holy Ghost, he signs himself from forehead to breast.

Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christi. Cum Sancto Spiritu, + in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

THE COLLECTS, EPISTLE, GRADUAL, TRACK OR ALLELUIA

Then he kisses the Altar in the midst, and turning to the people, says:

V.
Dominus vobiscum.

R.
Et cum spiritu tuo.

V.
Oremus.

Then the Collects, one or more, as the order of the Office demands. Then follows the Epistle, Gradual, and Tract, or Alleluia, with the Verse, or Sequence as the Season or quality of the Mass requires.

THE GOSPEL

These being ended, if it be a solemn Mass, the deacon places the book of the Gospels on the middle of the Altar, and the celebrant blesses incense as above: then the Deacon, kneeling before the Altar, says with joined hands:

Munda cor meum ac labia mea, omnipotens Deus, qui labia Isaiae Prophetae calculo mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione dignare mundare, ut sanctum Evangelium tuum digne valeam nuntiare. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Then he takes the book from the Altar, and again kneeling asks a blessing from the Priest, saying:

Jube, domne, benedicere.

P.
Dominus sit in corde tuo et in labiis tuis, ut digne et competenter annuntiem Evangelium suum. Amen.

And having received the blessing, he kisses the hand of the celebrant and going with the other ministers, the incense and the lights, to the place of the Gospel, he stands with joined hands and says:

Dominus vobiscum.

R.
Et cum spiritu tuo.

And announcing:

+ Sequentia (vel Initium) sancti Evangelii secundum N.

he signs the book with the thumb of his right hand at the beginning of the Gospel which he is to read, then himself on the forehead, the mouth and the breast: and while the ministers respond,

Gloria tibi, Domine.

he censes the book thrice, then reads the Gospel with joined hands.

Which ended, the Subdeacon carries the book to the Priest, who kisses the Gospel, saying:

Per evangelica dicta deleantur nostra delicta.

Then the priest is censed by the Deacon.

If, however, the Priest celebrates without Deacon and Subdeacon, when the book has been carried to the other side of the Altar, he bows in the midst, and with joined hands says: Cleanse my heart, as above, and Bid, Lord, a blessing. The Lord be in my heart and on my lips: that I may worthily and fitly proclaim his Gospel. Amen. Then turning to the book, he says, with joined hands: V. Dominus vobiscum. R. Et cum spiritu tuo. And announcing: + Sequentia [vel. Initium] sancti Evangelii secundum N.he signs the book with the thumb of his right hand at the beginning of the Gospel which he is to read, then himself on the forehead, the mouth and the breast: and reads the Gospel, as said before. At the end of which the minister responds: Laus tibi, Christe and the Priest kisses the Gospel, saying:Per evangelica dicta deleantur nostra delicat. as above.

Per evangelica dicta deleantur nostra delicta.

¶ In Masses of the Dead Cleanse my heart is said, but a blessing is not asked, lights are not carried, and the celebrant does not kiss the book.

THE CREED

Then at the midst of the Altar, extending, raising, and joining his hands, he says, if it is to be said,Credo in unum Deum, and proceeds with joined hands. When he says God, he bows his head to the Cross, which he does likewise when he says Jesus Christ, and together is worshipped. But at the wordsEt incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine: he genuflects until Et Homo Factus Est is said. At the end at the words Et vitam venturi saeculi he signs himself with the sign of the cross from forehead to breast.

Credo in unum Deum.
Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium. Et in unum Dominum Jesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum. Et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero. Genitum, not factum, consubstantialem Patri: per quem omnia facta sunt. Qui propter nos homines, et propter nostram salutem descendit de coelis. [here genuflect] Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine: et homo factus est. [rise] Crucifixus etiam pro nobis; sub Pontio Pilato passus, et sepultus est. Et resurrexit tertia die, secundum Scripturas. Et ascendit in coelum: sedet ad esteram Patris. Et iterum venturus est com gloria judicare vivos et mortuos: cujus regni non erit finis. Et in Spiritum Sanctum, Dominum et vivificantem: qui ex Patre procedit. Qui cum Patre, et Filio simul adoratur et conglorificatur: qui locutus est per Prophetas. Et unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum. + Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY

Then he kisses the Altar, and turning to the people says:

Dominus vobiscum.

R.
Et cum spiritu tuo.

P.
Oremus.

Which having been said, if the Mass be solemn, the Deacon presents the Paten with the Host to the celebrant: if it be private, the Priest himself takes the Paten with the Host, which he offers, saying:

Suscipe, sancte Pater, omnipotens aeterne Deus, hanc immaculatam hostiam, quam ego indignus famulus tuus offero tibi, Deo meo vivo et vero, pro innumerabilibus peccatis, et offensionibus, et negligentiis meis, et pro omnibus circumstantibus, [A sed et pro omnibus fidelibus Christianis vivis atque vivis atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis proficiat ad salutem vitam aeternam. Amen.

Then making a cross with the same Paten, he places the Host upon the Corporal. The Deacon ministers the wine, the Subdeacon the water in the Chalice: or if it be a private Mass, the Priest pours in both, and blesses with the sign of the Cross the water to be mixed in the Chalice saying:

Deus, qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per hujus aquae et vini mysterium, ejus divinatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Jesus Christus, Filius tuus, Dominus noster: qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus : per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

¶ In Masses of the Dead the foregoing Prayer is said: but the water is not blessed.

Then he receives the Chalice, and offers it, saying:

Offerimus tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris tuam deprecantes clementiam: ut in conspectu divinae majestatis tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi salute com odore suavitatis ascendat. Amen.

Then he makes the sign of the cross with the Chalice and places it upon the Corporal, and covers it with the Pall: then with hands joined upon the Altar, he says, bowing slightly:

In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine: et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

Standing erect, he extends his hands, raises them and joins them, and lifting his eyes to heaven and straightway lowering them, says:

Veni, sanctificator omnipotens aeterne Deus: Benedicit Oblata, prosequendo: et bene+dic hoc sacrificium tuo sancto nomini praeparatum.

THE INCENSING

Then, if he is celebrating solemnly, he blesses incense, saying:

Per intercessionem beati Michaelis Archangeli, stantis a dextris altaris incensi, et omnium electorum suorum, incensum istud dignetur Dominus + benedicere, et in odorem suavitatis accipere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

And receiving the thurible from the Deacon, he censes the Oblations, in the manner prescribed in the general Rubrics, saying:

Incensum istud a te benedictum ascendat ad te, Domine, et descendat super nos misericordia tua.

Then he incenses the Altar saying:

Ps. 140, 1-3.
Dirigatur, Domine, oratio mea sicut incensum in conspectu tuo: elevatio manuum mearum sacrificium vesper tinum. Pone, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis : ut non declinet cor meum in verba malitiae, ad excsandas excusationes in peccatis.

While he returns the thurible to the Deacon, he says:

Accendat in nobis Dominus ignem sui amoris, et flammam aeternae caritatis. Amen.

Then the Priest is censed by the Deacon, and afterwards the others in order. Meanwhile the Priest washes his hands, saying:

THE LAVABO

Ps. 25, 6-12
Lavabo inter innocentes manus meas: et circumdabo altare tuum, Domine, Ut audiam vocem laudis: et enarrem universa mirabila tua. Domine, dilexi decorem domus tuae: et locum habitationis gloriae tuae. Ne perdas cum impiis, Deus animam meam: et cum viris sanguinum vitam meam, in quorum manibus iniquitates sunt: dextera eorum repleta est muneribus. Ego autem in innocentia mea ingressus sum: redime me, et miserere mei. Pes meus stetit in directo: in ecclesiis benedicam te, Domine.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

¶ In Masses of the Dead, and during Passion Tide in Masses of the Season, Glory be is omitted.

Then bowing slightly in the middle of the Altar, with hands joined upon it, he says:

Suscipe sancta Trinitas, hanc obla tionem, quam tibi offerimus ob mem oriam passionis, resurrectionis, et ascensionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri: et in monorem beatae Mariae semper Virginis, et beati Joannis Baptistae, et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli, et istorum, et monium Sanctorum: ut illis proficiat ad honorem, nobis autem ad salutem: et illi pro nobis interceder e dignentur in coelis, quorum memoriam agimus in terris. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

THE ORATE FRATRES

Then he kisses the Altar, and turning to the people, he extends and joins his hands, and says, raising his voice a little:

Orate fratres, et meum ac vestrum sacrificium acceptabile fiat apud Deum Patrem omnipotentem.

The minister, or those standing around, respond: otherwise the Priest himself:

Suscipiat Dominus sacrificium de manibus tuis (vel meis) ad laudem et gloriam nominis sui, ad utilitatem quoque

THE SECRET PRAYERS

Then with hands extended immediately without Let us pray he adds the secret Prayers, which ended, when he has come to the conclusion, he says in a clear voice:

Per omnium saecula saeculorum. Amen.

THE PREFACE

He begins the Preface with both hands placed apart on the Altar and raises them a little when he says: Lift up your hearts. He joins them before his breast, and bows his head, when he says: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

Then he separates his hands, and holds them separated till the end of the Preface: which ended, he again joins them, and says, bowing: Holy. And when he says: Blessed is he that cometh, he makes the sign of the cross on himself from forehead to breast.

[Note: Proper Prefaces are appointed for the seasons and particular days. The common preface, for Masses where a proper Preface is not appointed, is here provided.]

THE CANON OF THE MASS

Te igitur, clementissime Pater, per Jesum Christum Filium tuum, Dominum nostrum, supplices rogamus ac petimus uti accepta habeas, et benedicas haec dona, haec munera, haec sancta sacrificia illibata; in primis quae tibi offerimus pro Ecclesia tua sancta catholica; quam pacificare, custodire, adunare, et regere digneris toto orbe terrarum: una cum famulo tuo Papa nostro N., et Antistite nostro N. et omnibus orthodoxis, atque catholicae et apostolicae fidei cultoribus.

COMMEMORATION OF THE LIVING

Memento, Domine, famulorum, famularumque tuarum N. et N. et omnium circumstantium, quorum tibi fides cognita est, et nota devotio, pro quibus tibi offerimus: vel qui tibi offerunt hoc sacrificium laudis pro se, suisque omnibus: pro redemptione animarum suarum, pro spe salutis, et incolumitis suae: tibique reddunt vota sua aeterno Deo, vivo et vero.

¶ Holding his hands spread out over the Oblations, he says:

Hanc igitur oblationem servitutis nostrae, sed et cunctae familiae tuae, quaesumus Domine, ut placatus accipias: diesque nostros in tua pace disponas, atque ab aeterna damnatione nos eripi, et in electorum tuorum jubeas grege numerari. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Quam oblationem tu, Deus, in omnibus, quaesumus, + benedictam, + adscriptam, + ratam, rationabilem, acceptabilemque facere digneris: ut nobis + Corpus, et + Sanguis fiat dilectissimi Filii tui Domini nostri Jesu Christi.

Qui pridie quam pateretur, accepit panem in sanctas ac venerabiles manus suas, et elevatis oculis in coelum ad te Deum Patrem suum omnipotentem tibi gratias agens, + benedixit, fregit, diditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accipite, et manducate ex hoc omnes:

Holding the Host with both hands between the thumbs and forefingers, he utters the words of consecration secretly, distinctly, and attentively over the Host, and at the same time over all, if more are to be consecrated.

Hoc est enim Corpus meum.

Having uttered these words, he immediately genuflects and adores the consecrated Host; rises, shews it to the people, replaces it upon the Corporal, and again genuflects and adores: and does not disjoin his forefingers and thumbs henceforth, except when the Host is to be handled, till after ablution of his fingers. Then, having uncovered the Chalice, he says:

Simili modo postquam coenatum est, accipiens et hunc praeclarum Calicem in sanctas ac venerabiles manus suas: item tibi gratias agens, + benedixit deditque discipulis suis, dicens: Accepite, et bibite ex eo omnes:

Hic est Enim Calix Sanguinis Mei, Novi et Aeterni Testamenti: Mysterium Fidei: Qui pro Vobis et pro Multis Effundetur in Remissionem Peccatorum.

Having uttered these words, he sets down the Chalice upon the Corporal and saying secretly:

Haec quotiescumque feceritis, in mei memoriam facietis.

Unde et memores, Domine, nos servi tui, sed et plebs tua sancta, ejusdem Christi Filii tui Domini nostri tam beatae Passionis, nec non et ab inferis Resurrectionis, sed et in coelos gloriosae Ascensionis: offerimus praeclarae majertati tuae de tuis donis ac datis hostiam , + puram, hostiam + sanctam, hostiam + immaculatam, Panem + sanctum vitae aeternae, et calicem + salutis perpetuae.

With extended hands he proceeds.

Supra quae propitio ac sereno vultu respicere digneris; et accepta habere, sicut i accepta habere dignatus es munera pueri tui justi Abel, et sacrificium patriarchae nostri Abrahae, et quod tibi obtulit summus sacerdos tuus Melchisedech, sanctum sacrificium, immaculatam hostiam.

THE EPICLESIS

COMMEMORATION FOR THE DEPARTED

Memento etiam, Domine, famulorum famularumque tuarum N. et N. qui nos praecesserunt cum signo fidei, et dormiunt in somno pacis.

He joins his hands and prays awhile for those departed for whom he intends to pray, then with extended hands proceeds:

Ipsis, Domine, et omnibus in Christo quiescentibus, locum refrigerii, lucis et pacis, ut indulgeas , deprecamur. Per eumdem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

He strikes his breast with his right hand, saying in a slightly louder voice:

Nobis quoque peccatoribus famulis tuis, de multitudine miserationum tuarum sperantibus, partem aliquam, et societat em donare digneris, cum tuis sanctis Apostolis et Martyribus: cum Joanne, Stephano, Matthia, Barnaba, Ignatio, Alexandro, Marcellino, Petro, Felicitate, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnete, Caecilia, Anastasis, et omnibus Sanctis tuis: intra quorum nos consortium, non aestimator meritim sed veniae, quaesumus, largitor admitte. Per Christum Dominum nostrum

Per quem haec omnia Domine, semper bona creas, + sanctificas, + vivificas, + benedicis et praestas nobis.

He uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, and takes the Host between the thumb and first finger of his right hand: and holding the Chalice with his left, he signs with the Host thrice from lip to lip of the Chalice, saying:

Per + ipsum, et cum + ipso, et in + ipso, est tibi Deo Patri + omnipotenti, in unitate Spiritus + Sancti,

Elevating the Chalice a little with the Host, he says:

omnis honor et gloria,

He replaces the Host, covers the Chalice with the Pall, genuflects, rises and says in an audible voice or sings:

per omnia saecula saeculorum. R. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Praeceptis salutaribus moniti, et divina instituione formati, audemus dicere:

Pater noster, qui es in coelis: sanctificetur nomen tuum: adveniat regnum tuum: fiat voluntas tua, sicut in coelo, et in terra. Panem nostrum quotibianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tationem.

V.
Sed libera nos a malo.

R.
Amen.

Then he takes the Paten between the fore and middle fingers of his right hand, and holding it upright upon the Altar says secretly:

Libera nos, quaesumus, Domine, ab omnibus malis, praeteritis, praesentibus, et futuris: et intercedente beata et gloriosa semper Virgine Dei Genitrice Maria, cum beatis Apostolis tuis Petro et Paulo, atque Andrea, et omnibus Sanctis, da propitius pacem in diebus nostris: ut ope misericordiae tuae adjuti, et a peccato simus semper liberi, et ab omni perturbatione securi.

He puts the Paten under the Host, uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, rises, takes the Host, and holding it with both hands over the Chalice, breaks it in the middle, saying:

Per eumdem Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum Filium tuum.

He places the half which he holds in his right hand on the Paten. Then from the part which remains in his left hand, he breaks a particle saying:

Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus.

He joins the other half, which he holds in his left hand, to the half laid upon the Paten, and retaining the small particle in his right hand over the Chalice, which he holds with his left by the knob below the cup, he says in an audible voice or sings:

Per omnia saecula saeculorum.

With the particle itself he signs thrice over the Chalice saying:

Pax + Domini sit + semper + vobiscum.

Et cum spiritu tuo.

He puts the particle into the Chalice, saying secretly:

Haec commixtio et consecratio, Corporis et Sanguinis Domini nostri Jesu Christi, fiat accipientibus nobis in vitam aeternam. Amen.

He covers the Chalice, genuflects, rises, and bowing to the Sacrament, joins his hands, and beating his breat thrice, says in an audible voice:

THE AGNUS DEI

Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, misere nobis;
Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, misere nobis;
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

In Masses of the Dead misere nobis is not said, but in its place dona els requiem, and the third time is added sempiternam.

THE PRAYER FOR PEACE

Then bowing, with hands joined upon the Altar, he says secretly the following Prayers:

Domine Jesu Christe, qui dixisti Apostolis tuis: Pacem relinquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: ne respicias peccata mea, sed fidem Ecclesiae tuae: eamque secundum voluntatem coadunare digneris: qui vivis et regnas Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

If the pax is to be given, he kisses the Altar, and giving the pax, says:

Pax vobiscum.

Et cum spiritu tuo.

In Masses of the Dead the pax is not given, nor is the preceding Prayer said.

Perceptio Corporis tui, Domine Jesu Christe, quod ego indinus sumere praesumo, non mihi proveniat in judicium et condemnationen; sed pro tua pietate prosit mihi ad tutamentum mentis et corporis, et ad medelam percipiendam. Qui vivis et regnas cum Deo Patre in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

THE COMMUNION

He genuflects, rises, and says:

Panem coelestem accipiam, et nomen Domini invocabo.

Then bowing slightly, he takes both parts of the Host between the thumb and forefinger of his left hand, and places the Paten between the same forefinger and the middle finger, and beating his breast three times with his right hand, he says thrice, devoutly and humbly, raising his voice a little:

Domine, non sum dignus, et intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

Afterwards signing himself with his right hand with the Host over the Paten, he says:

Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

And bowing himself, he reverently takes both parts of the Host: which having been consumed, he puts the Paten down upon the Corporal, and raising himself, joins his hands, and is still for a little space in meditation on the Most Holy Sacrament. Then he uncovers the Chalice, genuflects, collects the fragments, if there be any, and cleanses the Paten over the Chalice, saying meanwhile:

Quid retribuam Domino pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi? Calicem salutaris accipiam, et nomen Domini invoacbo. Laudans invocabo Dominum, et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.

He takes the Chalice in his right hand and signing himself with it says:

Sanguis Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam meam in vitam aeternam. Amen

Holding the Paten under the Chalice with his left hand, he reverently receives the Blood with the particle. Having received it, if there be any to be communicated, let him communicate them, before he purify himself [taking the Chalice or Ciborium in his left hand, and one particle, which he holds between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand somewhat raised above the ciborium or Chalice: and turning to the people in the midst of the Altar, he says in a clear voice:

Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi.

[Repeated a second and third time, then the Priest administers the Sacrament saying to each person:]

THE ABULTIONS

Afterwards, he says:

Quod ore sumpisimus, Domine, pura mente capiamus, et de munere temporali fiat nobis remedium sempiternum.

Meanwhile he presents the Chalice to the minister, who pours into it a little wine, wherewith he purifies himself: then he continues:

Corpus tuum, Domine, quod sumpsi, et Sanguis, quem potavi, adhaereat visceribus meis : et praest; ut in me non ramaneat scelerum macula, quem pura et sancta refecerunt Sacramenta. Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum, Amen

He washes and wipes his fingers, and takes the ablution: he wipes his mouth and the Chalice, which, having folded the Corporal, he covers and places on the Altar as before: then he proceeds with the Mass.

THE BLESSING

Having said Ite, Missa est, the Priest bows himself before the midst of the Altar, and with hands joined thereon, says secretly:

Placeat tibi, sancta Trinitas, obsequium servitutis meae: et praesta, ut sacrificium quod oculis tuae majestatis indignus obtuli, tibi sit acceptabile, mihique, et omnibus proquibus illud obtuli, sit te miserante propitiabile. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Then he kisses the Altar: and raising his eyes, extending, raising, and joining his hands, and bowing his head to the Cross, and turning to the people, blessing them once only, even in solemn Masses, he proceeds:

Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater, et + Filius, et Spiritus Sanctus.

THE LAST GOSPEL

Then the Priest at the Gospel corner says with hands joined.

And signing with the sign of the Cross first the Altar or book, then himself on forehead, mouth and breast, he says:
