Back in September of 2001, I mentioned to my friend Lisa Brown
of Copperstone Labradors
that I was interested in getting a mature second dog, as a companion
for my pup
(who was a year at the time). She put me in contact with
a longtime breeder whose stud dogs she had used in the past-that needed
a home for Drake, a 5 year old yellow lab. I was
hesitant at first, not knowing what I could be in store for as
adults already have their habits and personality often in place, but with
careful debating I decided that I could, without a doubt provide a happy
and loving home to not just one lab, but a second one as well.
The first night was tough. It was tougher than the first
night with the puppy,
but little did I know at the time that Drake would adjust as
quickly as he did.
He was nervous for the first few days, but he soon realized that
this
was his new home, and that he would be not only fed and watered
everyday but
loved, walked and pet to his hearts content. He is very
loyal, sweet and gentle as well as loving.
I would have ten of him if my husband would let me!
If you should be lucky enough to adopt one of Dale Speck's dogs,
be patient, be kind
and generous with your love, and they will give it back to you
tenfold.
