COURSE OUTLINE
The following is a list of topics that are covered in detail within the Anhydrous Ammonia
Training Program. Additional information can be added in order to tailor the program to
suit your specific needs.
1. Introduction: What is Anhydrous Ammonia, and what is it used for.
2. Properties: Solubility, specific gravity, warning properties, expansion rate.
3. Hazards
3.1 Fire: Explosive range, Labeling, T.D.G.
3.2 Explosion: Contact with Dangerously reactive products.
3.3 Health: Strong irritant to skin and eyes, attacks mucous membranes and respiratory
tract. Time weighted and short term exposure values.
4. Storage and Handling
4.1 Tank Car Loading and Unloading: Specific equipment and procedures
4.2 Pumphouse Buildings: Locations and designs, special circumstances
4.3 Storage and Tanks: Characteristics of storage tanks and handling procedures
4.4 Cylinders: Fill levels, temperature limitations, discharging in liquid or gas form
Limiting the amount of ammonia stored in cylinders.
5. Process Equipment Design: Enclosed systems, boilers and pressure vessels, tanks,
piping and fittings.
6. Industrial Processes Using Ammonia:
6.1 Machinery Rooms: Adherence to C.S.A. Standards for Mechanical Refrigeration
6.2 Dissociation Rooms: Decomposition of Ammonia into Nitrogen and Hydrogen
7. Employee Safety
7.1 Education and Training: Safe handling, knowledge of hazards, emergency
response, Personal Protective Equipment, Equipment
failures. Eye wash stations and safety showers.
7.2 Ammonia Leaks: Handling Ammonia Leaks and controlling personnel, leak
detection, testing procedures.

8. Fire Protection: The use of water spray and why it works. Portable Extinguishers
