Dogs in need of "forever" or foster homes

Roxie needs home...

Bear - adopted!!!

Another very handsome youngster in a desperate need of a forever home.

Bear was born on July 13, 2001, and as a 10 week old puppy was bought as a gift for a young man.

Even though Bear's new owner did not have much experience with raising a puppy, Bear was raised with love and as much commitment as his young master could muster.

Just over a year later the family situation changed and Bear cannot follow his best friend and partner when his owner has to move. No one in the family is in a position to take Bear into their home.

Bear was initially described over the phone as skittish with strangers. When I first saw him in person he did make an impression of a nervous, frightened boy. He was barking excessively, but it was easy to see almost immediately that his behaviour was not caused by his temperament but rather by confusing messages from the humans in his life.

Within half an hour Bear was totally comfortable with me, not only enjoying the treats, and rubs all over his body but he kept inviting me to play ball with him, and then stretched in the middle of the floor, totally relaxed and almost oblivious to any movements and any activities in the room. I was expecting him to start barking again when I got up, but no, I only got a tail wag. Skittish dogs do not behave this way.

Apparently, Bear seemed curious and a bit uncomfortable when a very young visiting human baby was waving her arms and kicking her legs laying on the blanket on the floor.

Bear is not aggressive with other dogs.

He loves to play ball, go for walks, or will just love to keep you company when you're busy around the house. He is a very clean boy.

Bear is healthy. All his shots are up to date and he will be neutered before he goes to his forever home. Bear has already been neutered.

UPDATE: Bear has been adopted by very kind but at the same time a very hard working couple. There is a shift work involved in a very stressful profession.

The following are excerpts from the e-mail that came just last night:

...Bear is a beautiful, good dog but unfortunately our lifestyle is not giving him what he needs and deserves...

...No shift is easy for Bear or us to handle. Evening and midnight shifts mean getting home at 4am or 8am to go to sleep just when Bear has only a few more hours to go or is ready to wake up. He then has to just lie down again or sleep through the morning and sometimes into the afternoon...

...We have spent a good deal of time fighting with a difficult decision but have ultimately realized we are not the most appropriate home for Bear...

We are of course disappointed, but we understand and respect the decision... Therefore Bear needs a new, this time a "forever" home very soon...

Casey

Casey is just a baby. She was born on November 25, 2002

Casey's pigment is what breeders call "blue". It is a unique, rare pigmentation of a standard black and tan dog where black on the face and saddle is diluted... Puppies are born this way. You can find more about "Blue German Shepherds" on Blue Dogs Website.

When Casey was 4 months old she was purchased from the pet store by a kind family who was concerned about this beautiful puppy living in the store display cage...

For the next couple of months Casey has been living in the apartment building with couple of other dogs...

Unfortunately the family is moving and dogs cannot move with them. Therefore, Casey needs a new home to call her own.

Casey is a friendly girl who likes people and has no problem with other dogs. She is a mellow, well behaved puppy.

Casey is very healthy, her shots are up to date. She is going to be spayed prior to her adoption.

Casey is almost fully house trained. She tries very hard and only occasionally she'll miss a newspaper spread for that purpose in the kitchen - please remember that Casey lives in a high-rise apartment building where going out involves waiting for an elevator which is not easy for a young puppy.

Casey is full of potential and she needs a kind family to help her to reach that potential...

Buster - adopted!!!

Buster is an exceptional 9 years old boy.

After being trained for Security business, Buster was "working" as a K9 Security Officer for two years. Buster however did not look and act mean enough for the business. He always loved people, other dogs and babies... Therefore, his human partner was told that he can buy the dog, or he'll be sold elsewhere...

They both left the company shortly after to live with the man's parents. For the next 5 years Buster was living with the elderly and frail people while his young owner looked for another job, then moved out, and started his own family. It did not include Buster...

Health of the parents deteriorated to the point that their house had to be sold. They're moving into a Nursing Home, where there is no room for a large, hairy dog no matter how friendly and devoted the dog is. There is no room for Buster with other family members...

With broken hearts both parents had to say good-bye to their companion and best friend and very upset and confused Buster came into our care just a few days ago.

Buster is in Foster Care. Is his foster dad going to find a permanent spot in his heart for Buster? Will Buster enjoy going to work with his new dad every day, helping with customers and keeping an eye on the store?

Buster is very healthy for his age, just a touch of arthritis, and no gray hair on his muzzle. His shots are up to date, however he is not neutered, therefore he needs a very responsible owners.

Buster is great with people, children, other dogs. He loves to play ball, going for walks or just hang around while you watch TV, work on the computer, or just fuss over him.

You could not ask for a better dog, friend or companion...

Roxie

It is easy to remember Roxie's birthday. She was born on 06/06/96.

This beautiful girl was originally purchased from the pet store when she was just a puppy. Very soon after, she was given to another family, and remained a part of this loving family for more than 5 years.

17 months ago a pair of twins joined the family. Roxie accepted both babies as if they were her own.

However, for some unknown reason one of the twins has a major problem accepting Roxie. While one of them loves Roxie's soft coat, her kisses and security of her big presence, his little brother screams every time Roxie is around and all efforts to change his mind failed. Therefore Roxie had to be excluded from most of family activities, which was very unfair to this loving girl.

It was a heart wrenching decision to let Roxie go, but it seemed the only way...

Roxie is a fun girl, obedient and loyal. She is healthy, spayed, her shots will be up to date. She is fully house-trained and well over puppy's destructive stage nonsense.

Roxie loves going for walks, to play ball, or to just hang around her family. She needs to improve her social skills relating to strange dogs, but she's not really dog aggressive.

Bauer - adopted!!!

This very handsome sable youngster had just turned one year old in January 2003.

Bauer moved to Toronto recently from United States with his master.

Unfortunately this wonderful, full of energy boy is having a difficult time adjusting to life in an apartment building in the center of the city.

He cries and barks when left alone in the apartment while his owner is busy not only holding a temporary job, but looking for something more permanent.

Bauer is ordered out and he has to move within a week.

Bauer is a very well adjusted, friendly boy. But he is also still a pup, full of energy and fun. He loves to play ball and run free in the park... He is very responsive and would do anything for a treat.

All his training up to now was positive, he was always treated with kindness, so Bauer has no emotional scars and will easily adjust to his new forever family.

Bauer is healthy. All his shots are up to date and he is neutered

Remus - placed!!!

It is heartbreaking to see an older dog, on a verge of giving up.

Remus, a very handsome, 10 years old sable boy seems to know that he is no longer wanted as a member of his beloved family.

About 5 years ago Remus' original owner died. Remus took it very hard. He got depressed, started scratching, lost weight. He was taken in by members of the family. He began to enjoy long walks and play in the park again. Soon Remus committed himself to his new owners and became a devoted, enjoyed by all, family dog.

Then a new baby boy joined the family. Remus welcomed the baby with an open heart. He took even more seriously his responsibility of being a protector, a friend and a playmate. He was tolerant of baby tugging at his tail and ears, poking at his eyes and getting into his food dish. He was proud that he was trusted as one of the family.

It was absolutely heartbreaking for both Remus and his family when it was discovered that the cause of baby's continuos coughing was... dog allergies.

Remus is not able to participate in any family activities anymore. He is relegated to a back room, where he is wilting away dreaming of the times when he was loved, enjoyed and appreciated. Remus lost weight again, he is scratching again, he is even chewing on his tail. He does not care that his room is spotless, water always fresh, food always in his dish. If he cannot be a part of the family he does not want to live...

Remus needs a new home where he can feel important again. He still has so much to share. He would love to share walks, watch TV together with someone who would appreciate his wisdom, kindness, patience and his big heart. We know that there is a person out there with an equally large heart who is not be afraid to open it to this well deserving elderly gentleman, knowing that there are only few short years before the final goodbye.

Remus is healthy with a bit of arthritis controlled with medication. His shots are up to date.

Remus likes other dogs, cats, children and people... he could not be a more perfect dog...

Dodger - adopted!!!

Dodger will be 7 years old very soon, on March 6, 2003.

In October 2002 Dodger's owner moved to an apartment while looking for a new house.

Dodger went to live temporarily with a family member.

Dodger was not happy left alone in the basement for an entire long day. He chewed through two walls to get out. So Dodger was moved into the garage.

Dodger was not happy alone in the garage neither. He destroyed the door to get out.

Then the original owner decided that he did not want the house after all, and he did not want Dodger back neither.

Dodger was not wanted by anyone. He was depressed alone in the garage...

The difficult decision was made and the appointment was made for February 13, 2003 to put Dodger out of his misery unless someone will take Dodger by then.

The call we got was: "...I don't mean to put a pressure on you, but..."

We picked up Dodger up on that Thursday morning, he did not deserve to die... New foster mom welcomed this boy with an open heart.

Dodger is a wonderful, friendly, fun loving dog, but at the moment confused and perplexed by yet another change. He is neutered, his shots are up to date, he is healthy, though overweight, and he is fully house trained.

On Saturday, February 15th, a lady from Quebec was coming, interested in adopting another rescue dog in our care. When she and her son met Dodger, it was a love from the first sight. For Dodger a clinching part was THE TRUCK. When Dodger saw their brand new red pick up truck, he instantly perked up, got excited, jumped in the cab, ready to go... Dodger settled right in, in his new forever home... He goes for a ride in HIS TRUCK every day, at least to MacDonald for an ice cream... We know that his seventh birthday and all birthdays after that will be happy ones...

Kane - adopted!!!

Kane is back with us looking for yet another home.

Kane is an absolutely amazing boy. He is turning 6 this month. He is handsome, sweet and gentle. At the same time he loves life, he loves to play ball, going for walks, swimming in the lake, and above all he adores small children. When his little playmate was born almost four years ago Kane welcomed her with his whole heart and then helped to raise her the way only true German Shepherd is capable of doing.

Kane was raised and trained with love. He had regular vet check-ups, heartworm preventive and all his physical needs were well looked after.

Because of change in the family situation his owners were heartbroken as Kane no longer can share their lives.

Kane had to say goodbye to a loving family and one little girl. Now Kane has three little people to love and look after. Kane also has a new doggie companion, a sweet cocker spaniel named Fancy. There are also two adults in the family. All this keeps Kane very, very busy, as he has to make sure that the household runs smoothly and everybody is safe and happy.

Unfortunately Kane has to say goodbye again. He was adopted almost a year ago. Very soon Kane learned to open the gate of his new backyard if it is not latched properly and learned to enjoy visiting with friends in the neighbourhood. He loves to go to the school yard where his little friends are during the day and when they are busy in the classroom he visits with whoever is around. Unfortunately in the city today this is not acceptable. Kane lives in Toronto and not in a small, friendly town. Today not many people understand the wagging tail and friendly smile of a large dog. A busy street and its traffic is a concern as well. Kane was picked up by the Animal Control several times, and when he came home with a police officer and $255 ticket his family realized that it was impossible for them to control the gate (there is additionally careless tenants living in the basement) and we're all concerned about Kane's safety.

Kane needs a new home. He would love someone to share long walks with, someone who would have time to play ball with him, someone who would appreciate his kisses, and know how to rub his belly.

In return, Kane will be an excellent guard dog, will follow his new mom or dad around, will "speak" on command, and play "dead" to amuse the visiting friends.

Brock

This very handsome boy was a stray.

When he was found he was so weak that he could hardly stand up. When slightly pushed he would loose his balance and fall.

When the call came from the shelter about this skeleton of a dog, I just met a wonderful family who recently lost their dog after months of illness and was ready to open their home again to another furry best friend.

When they met Brock there was no hesitation about fostering him. Brock, not ready for adoption yet needed some experienced home to monitor his food intake as his weakened body had to gain weight slowly. Although he was ravenous his meals had to be initially small but frequent.

Brock also needed a quiet place that would make him feel safe, warm and loved.

Brock found what he needed and more... He follows his mom around, enjoys longer and longer walks, visits to the store, and evenings in front of TV. He tolerates two resident cats...

He is loved by an entire foster family... Is Brock in his "forever" home? We certainly hope so... It would be very, very hard, if not impossible to find a better, warmer place for Brock to call "home".

Kira

Kira is a beautiful girl. She is also smart, loyal, and sweet.

Kira is about 5 years old and her life was not easy. She was bumped from home to home until she ended up in the local Humane Society. She was there for a long time. When she was scheduled to be put down a kind soul rescued this confused girl. She joined a wonderful family. Kira was loved and spoiled for the first time in her life.

Now it's time for Kira to be on the move again. There was a new addition to the family and the baby developed major allergies to Kira. So Kira is not able to stay inside the house or sleep on bed anymore.

Kira tends to have separation anxiety caused by too many changes in her life. She is also afraid of dark and of being left alone outside for too long.

But Kira loves her family, she is affectionate, loving and very obedient.

Kira IS a wonderful girl. She is protective of her family but not really aggressive.

Kira will make a wonderful addition to a family that would enjoy a dog on the couch, on top of the bed at night, a family that would enjoy a good snuggle with a furry friend. It would be good if Kira's new family could play ball and go for long hikes...

Phantom - adopted!!!

Phantom is a beautiful and very smart girl. She just turned two on December 27. She's a fun loving girl, who never tires of playing. When her mom has enough of tossing the ball though, Phantom is happy to just follow her around as the true German Shepherd should.

It wasn't always like that. Until just 3 months ago Phantom was owned by a gentleman who was training Phantom in Schutzhund. Although Phantom comes from North American show bloodlines, she enjoyed "working", was very good in her training and her owner had high expectations for her. Unfortunately Phantom severely injured her knee. Even if an expensive surgery was successful, her owner decided that she would never be able to compete, therefore she was useless to him.

A wonderful lady with a big heart saved Phantom from euthanasia, and welcomed this sweet and very grateful girl into her home and heart. Phantom had the surgery to repair her injured knee. She is on a way to a complete recovery. Although she might always walk with a slight limp this will not prevent her from fully enjoying her life.

But Phantom cannot stay with people who not only saved her life, but filled that life with joy of being part of the loving family. There was already 5 year old rottie in the household when Phantom arrived and they became best friends. Unfortunately the rottie has Addison disease and playing with an energetic dog like Phantom might literally kill her. This is something her mom cannot allow. Therefore, on a vet recommendation, a heart wrenching decision was made to find Phantom a new home, and new family to love.

Phantom is a wonderful dog and she will be a wonderful companion to someone who would appreciate and enjoy her fun loving nature, her loyalty, intelligence and her beauty. Someone who loves long walks and loves to play ball.

If there are cats in the family they MUST enjoy being chased. Phantom would not hurt the kitty, but she did traumatize few times the kitty she lives with right now.

Phantom is healthy, very clean in the house, and crate trained. She is microchipped and spayed.

Hobo - adopted!!!

"If you don't take him RIGHT NOW, I'm going to shoot the !@#%&? thing!!!" This is what Hobo's owner told me when I met him in order to assess the pup and take his photos for the web site.

Hobo was born on April 15, 2001. He is certainly not the Littlest Hobo -- he's quite a large pup. But he is probably as smart as the Littlest Hobo. He's comfortable with people and seems OK with other friendly dogs.

Hobo spent most of his short life on a thick chain. He came matted, smelly, his underbelly covered with caked mud.

Hobo has absolutely no manners, he does not know how to walk on a leash, and because of his size he is not easy to control.

Hobo is not hyper, even in totally new situations he does not panic. Apparently this was his first trip out of the farm. He lived far up north, so Hobo was brought down to meet me at Tim Horton's just north of Toronto. He was not too concerned about the busy highway and several strangers we met in a parking lot.

With an experienced family Hobo will become a wonderful member of that family. He needs to learn how to live inside the house and how to act civilized.

There does not seem to be anything wrong with this very neglected boy. He is not interested in playing ball as yet, but he did enjoy playing with plastic bottles when he was still on the farm.

Hobo appears healthy. He had his shots last summer (to be confirmed with the clinic), he still needs to be neutered.

Lucas - adopted!!!

Lucas is a very, very handsome 5 years old boy.

This is a second time in his life that Lucas is looking for a new family to call his own. Although appreciated by both previous owners, Lucas was left alone for up to 15 hours at the time as both his previous owners worked long shifts.

Lucas is a very affectionate, cuddly boy who desperately needs to follow his mom or dad around, he does not do well at all left alone for extended periods of time. He needs to go for long walks, play ball, and cuddle in front of TV. Lucas also loves to go fishing. He would love to do some agility or other FUN training.

Lucas is a very stable, obedient, smart boy desperate for his partner's approval. He listens immediately when told to stop what he's doing and goes to lay down. It looks though, like Lucas was obedience trained without much thought given to his drives. He has plenty of healthy, normal for a young boy drives which he never had an opportunity to explore and learn to control. It seems, he is used to someone controlling him at all times. He does not mind it at all, but he has to learn how to unload his drives in an appropriate way - on the ball and other fun activities rather than a cat, squirrel or other dogs.

In one of his former homes he did live with a cat, and in another with 2 dogs for a short time and there were never any problems.

He's ok when left alone in the house, for short periods of time - no destructive behaviour, no accidents, no barking at all.

Lucas appears to be healthy, he has been neutered & his shots are up to date.

PUPPIES!!!... - ...all gone...

Bella was a stray up north in the cottage country. She was friendly and after a bath, and piles of brushed out hair, she turned out to be a good looking girl. She got along well with the resident German Shepherd Dog, so after couple of weeks, when no one claimed her, she was taken to the vet for a check-up,

"Did you know that she is pregnant?" No, the lady had no idea that she took in more than one shepherd.

There was absolutely no way she was prepared to go through the whelping and caring for a litter of newborn pups. Unless our rescue would take her in to have her pups, Bella was going to the local pound.

So, on June 25 Bella arrived in Toronto and 5 days later her litter arrived as well.

Pups are healthy, they are ALL black & tan. Some are larger, some smaller, it is hard to tell what and if they are mixed with anything... Doberman? Maybe lab... Very likely a German Shepherd mix...

Before they go puppies will be dewormed and will have their first set of shots, they will also be microchipped. They will be ready to go to their new homes at the end of August.

It is not very often, this is in fact only the third time in the past 20+ years that the rescued girl came pregnant and produced a litter of healthy puppies.

Our adoption fee is generally $250 for a young and healthy dog, but we would like an additional donation, if possible, to offset some of the costs of caring for those babies.

Three of the 5 weeks old beauties...

Carley - adopted!!!

Carley is a beautiful girl. She is probably 6 or 7 years old.

Carley was an unclaimed stray. She arrived in the shelter in terrible condition. She was filthy, needed treatment for the whipworm and other parasites. Like all other strays found without a microchip or any other ID Carley was obviously abandoned by her owner, who no longer wanted her and made no effort to find her whereabouts. Even if she was loved and enjoyed as a puppy, the recent scars of rejection are preventing Carley from fully enjoying her life.

Carley was deteriorating in the shelter environment-- she was becoming intolerant with other dogs, which is a frequent problem with dogs that remain in the shelter for too long.

She desperately needs a partner who would enjoy long walks with her, someone who would play ball with her, someone who would love to have a dog always by his side ready for the next command.

Carley is a very responsive girl who obviously, in true German Shepherd fashion, enjoys doing things together.

Carley appears to be healthy, but as she obviously did not get much exercise before, she needs to build up her muscles and get in better shape. Carley has been spayed.

Bismarck - adopted!!!

All Bismarck needs is a loving and patient person to follow around.

This very handsome, a bit shy boy loves to cuddle. He loves to be very close to someone he can call his partner, soul mate, his best friend.

He is loyal, devoted, he bonds for life. He needs a truly "forever" family to call his own.

Bismarck is very smart, and very obedient. He loves to chase ball, but he still has to learn to bring the ball back.

He's reasonably good with other dogs -- he's not looking for trouble... He's however a bit insecure with strange dogs and has to learn all fun things dogs enjoy in the park, and Bismarck is ready to learn them with a kind guidance.

Bismarck is neutered. He is healthy, he's about 4 years old.

Zeus (A) - adopted!!!

Zeus, a 4 years old boy lived with his last family since he was a baby. Now, he is in a boarding kennel as all our foster homes are full. He desperately needs a kind family who would understand and appreciate this wonderful dog.

Zeus is an extremely patient boy. He tolerated his very active, very mischievous little friend who used to pull his tail and his ears, and run into him at full speed. He also tolerated numerous cats and kittens in the household. I saw him cautiously walking around the litter of little kitties scampering all over the place. He patiently allowed the kittens to crawl and pounce all over him.

But every dog has its limits and will tolerate only so much of abuse, yelling and general stress in the household.

It came as an absolute shock for the family when Zeus killed one of the kittens who ignored Zeus' warning and got into his food bowl. Most likely Zeus did not realize that he was just too strong for the little thing. This incident was the reason for the family to decide to give Zeus up.

Zeus has a recurring problem with one of his ears which needs attention about once a year.

Beside the ear problem Zeus is healthy, he is neutered, and his shots are up to date.

Zeus is very obedient and in general a very good boy. Only sometimes he would steal food off the kitchen counter.

Rocky - adopted!!!

It is hard to imagine a more handsome German Shepherd Dog, smarter, or more devoted to his family.

This youngster will be 3 years old in October. He lived with the same family all his life, loved and spoiled by both parents and children.

Rocky is a high energy boy, he loves to play ball, run in the park & have all the fun that young shepherds love and need to mature into responsible and well adjusted adults.

There is a very unusual reason why Rocky has to leave his devoted family. From the moment the family moved into its present neighbourhood Rocky developed a profound dislike to their next door neighbours. Neighbours don't like Rocky, are terrified of him and the situation is getting out of control. All attempts to resolve the conflict failed. Moving again is not an option, therefore Rocky needs a new home and a new family to call his own.

Rocky is a generally healthy boy. He is prone to an ear infection which is easily cleared with antibiotics. All his shots are up to date.

Tundra - adopted!!!

Tundra is an absolutely amazing girl. She is smart, she is friendly with people, she is very well trained, very loyal to her owner. She is a true German Shepherd.

Tundra is also beautiful. She is 6 years old, healthy, spayed, her shots are up to date.

Tundra also loves to sing, therefore it would be important for her new family to know how to be or know how to pretend to be a conductor of an orchestra

Why is Tundra in need of new home?

Well, Tundra lives in the community with many, many dogs, both resident and visiting, and Tundra is NOT RELABLE with other K9s. There were numerous incidents of Tundra's aggression toward passing dogs and her present owner is very concerned that one more attack will spell euthanasia for this very special girl. Owner's fear, unfortunately, makes the whole matter worse.

Tundra needs an experienced person who would help her to deal with the problem she has with other dogs. It is a very workable problem. She needs to change her mind about other dogs. Instead of facing confrontation and stress every time another dog is around, she needs to experience something wonderful and start looking forward to meeting other dogs. We tried this method and it works with Tundra, as it works with dozens and dozens of other "dog aggressive" German Shepherds.

We hope to find a family for Tundra without other dogs to start with, family who would be prepared to work with Tundra using positive, non compulsive methods under our guidance.

Bandit

Bandit is 12 years old. This sweet and gentle boy was living with his owner his entire life, following her all day, always attentive, helping with house and garden chores.

Now, Bandit does not understand why the person who was always there suddenly left, leaving him all alone.

In fact, his owner left the country and is not coming back. Her son, a young man is gone to work from 7am until 7pm, leaving Bandit alone in the house. Additionally he has a social life and does not want the responsibilities of looking after an old dog. He did try to leave Bandit outside in the small yard, but Bandit not used to feeling abandoned cried, upsetting the neighbours.

Therefore this old, always loyal dog is looking for a new home and a new friend that would help him feel wanted and useful again.

Bandit loves people, other dogs, he loves going for a walk and he is reasonably obedient. Bandit is fully housetrained and respectful of furniture and things that do not belong to him.

Bandit is very healthy for his age, he is neutered, and his shots are due in the fall.

Zeus (B) - adopted!!!

Zeus, a very handsome boy, just turned 4 years old on June 10. He lived with the same family all his life. Actually, he did not live with them, he lived outside in their backyard. Zeus was never allowed inside. All his life he was chained to his doghouse. Often his owners would go away for weeks at the time leaving Zeus behind.

Zeus was lucky to have kind and very special neighbours who not only made sure that he had fresh water in the hot summer days, but provided blankets for his doghouse in the winter. One very special lady would also take Zeus regularly to the park, and was teaching him how to enjoy a toy and other dogs.

Zeus responds well to kindness -- he is kind and friendly in return. Although he did not have any training, he is not out of control, and he does know how to sit and go down for a cookie.

This coming Friday, June 14, 2002 his owners are moving. The house is sold and new owners are moving in. Zeus was not included in anybody's plans.

Zeus desperately needs a new home. He needs someone to teach him house manners, someone who would enjoy long walks, and play ball with him. Zeus is very smart and he learns fast. He gets along well with everyone,

Zeus is healthy, he is neutered, he is due for his shots at the end of June.

Jeffrey - adopted!!!

It takes a very special heart that would open to an older boy, knowing that in few short years it will be painfully broken when the time comes to say the final "good bye". But this very special boy still has to offer more than many dogs can offer in their lifetime.

Jeffrey is 10 years old. Life of this very handsome gentleman was not easy. He faithfully devoted his life to his owner, a mentally ill young man. Jeffrey, a true German Shepherd, understood that it was his duty to look after his sick master. He understood that German Shepherd's loyalty goes all the way, has no limit, and he understood true meaning of "for better, for worse". He knew that he was an only friend that his master ever had.

When we were called about possible dog abuse last summer and met Jeffrey, we saw in his gentle and wise eyes an absolute devotion for his human partner. His owner just rented a room on a top floor of a private rooming house. He neglected to tell the landlady living on the main floor, that he will be moving in with a large dog. Landlady was at first terrified and worried about the safety of her own elderly dog and a cat. She was also concerned that dog was left alone for very long hours without water, food and opportunity to relieve himself.

When we offered to purchase Jeffrey, his owner, always in need of money, absolutely refused: "How could I sell my friend, he's all I've got..."

After being introduced properly to Jeffrey, the landlady who has the heart of gold, learned to love this big, wonderful boy, With the help of a local Cat Rescue, who offered to walk Jeffrey when needed, and to assure that he was provided with food, Jeffrey was allowed to stay, allowed the use of main floor and the backyard. He showed his gratitude by loving the landlady, respecting her dog and her cat, loving her grandchildren and making sure that nothing bad happened to his new mistress.

Life was good to Jeffrey, but it was not to last.

All Jeffrey's love was not able to protect his landlady from a terminal cancer with just few months left to live. Jeffrey's owner, obviously not able to cope emotionally with the situation disappeared leaving his grieving dog behind. This happened 4 weeks ago.

Jeffrey had to leave as well. Jeffrey is very depressed and upset. He's desperately missing both his owner and the landlady. He worries about their safety and well being.

Jeffrey desperately needs someone who would appreciate his devotion, his wisdom and who would like to learn from him the true meaning of loyalty and friendship.

Jeffrey is healthy for his age, with just a touch of arthritis. His shots are up to date and he is neutered.

Bailey - adopted!!!

Bailey's early puppyhood was not easy. She was approximately 5 months old when she was found tied up to a tree without food or water, barely alive, just skin and bones, covered with fleas and flies. Her front paws and her front teeth were deformed from trying to free herself or from being beaten. She obviously never experienced human kindness as she was terrified of people.

She was nursed back to health by kind people, cleared from all parasites including tape and whipworms. Within few months she was adopted by another kind family.

That was three years ago. Bailey is not the same dog anymore. She loves her owners including a human baby that joined the family. She is sweet, gentle and very obedient. She is fully house-trained. She loves to play ball and loves to go for walks or run in the park.

The only problem Bailey has is a severe separation anxiety, which is a very frequent condition in previously abused dogs. Bailey has to be in her crate when no one is in the house. She is used to it and quietly and patiently waits for her owners to come home.

Bailey gets along well with Lilly, another German Shepherd in the family.

Her present owners, both in military service, will be both going soon overseas. Grandparents will be looking after the baby and Lilly, but two large dogs and the baby will be simply too much for them and Bailey needs a new forever home.

Bailey looks like a pure bred German Shepherd but she might not be. Bailey is healthy, she is spayed, and her shots are up to date.

Kerry - adopted!!!

Her entire life, Kerry was locked alone in the dungeon of a basement 23 hours a day. For one hour a day, if owners remembered, she was tied up to the side of the house on a 10' chain. Often, she had no water, even on hot summer days. She is 6 years old and she really deserves a better life.

Kerry is a beautiful sable girl, her shots are up to date, and she is spayed.

She has to learn how to walk on leash and needs to acquire some basic social skills, but overall she is a wonderful, sweet, and loving girl who "melts" at the smallest sign of kindness offered to her. She loves to be with people, other dogs, play ball, and give kisses. She has a sunny disposition in spite of the miserable life this girl has had.

Kerry is very, very gentle with children, but she has to learn to be gentle with small dogs, she has to understand that she is large and might be too heavy to play rough with delicate or timid little doggies.

Kerry requires a kind, but firm mom or dad to help her go through her puppyhood she never had and become well behaved and well adjusted member of her forever family and a society at large.

Since she came to our rescue Kerry was in two loving foster homes. With help of loving and patient foster parents Kerry made a tremendous progress. Her first foster mom and dad loved her to bits and Kerry loved them with all her heart. They decided to adopt this sweet and loving girl. Kerry however was too big for her little white doggie housemate and although she was much better with the cat she frightened the poor thing. Kerry has to go to a new home where her new parents will appreciate her big and loving heart, and would be fair but firm with her.

Kerry is in foster home of professional dog trainer. She is responding very well to his firm but very loving guidance. Kerry knows now how to walk on a lash, how to sit and lie down. She is very good with other dogs.

It is time for Kerry to go to a new "forever" home where her new parents will appreciate her big and loving heart, and would be fair but firm with her.

Jerry - adopted!!!

Jerry is a very handsome, and very sweet youngster, just over a year old. As a young pup, no more than 8-10 months old, he was abandoned by his owners and for the next 6-8 months he had to fend for himself.

In his short life Jerry obviously never experienced any kindness, he was terrified of people and afraid of other dogs.

It took weeks of efforts of the local Animal Control to capture this frightened youngster - he was finally taken down with a tranquilizer gun.

Kindness and patience of one very special lady in the shelter helped Jerry to finally accept the human touch and he's learning slowly that the world is not always hostile and cold.

Jerry is healthy, his shots are up to date, he is already fixed. He eats well and he is very, very clean in his pen.

Jerry is going to make a wonderful companion to a patient and kind mom or dad who would understand this boy's insecurities and help him to overcome them. Jerry is totally non-aggressive and HE IS NOT a fear biter which is often a case with dogs who had a similar puppyhood.

On his first walk with a group of other dogs, Jerry did very well. He obviously enjoyed other dogs, and all sounds and smells of a ravine.

Kelly

Kelly is about 4-5 years old. She was rescued from the life in the basement by a person who cannot keep her any longer as Kelly is not compatible with her two Border Collies. Kelly is not aggressive with other dogs or people.

Kelly is healthy, she is spayed, she is housebroken.

She needs to acquire more social skills as years in the basement damaged her self esteem. She continues to make great progress with her present family.

Bruna - adopted!!!

Bruna is a three years old girl. She came from the family that was moving and could not take her with them. Although she was an outdoor dog she is very clean in the house. There was a 10 year old human child in the family and Bruna was apparently very good with all visiting friends playing in the backyard.

Bruna is a very dominant girl. She gets along well with friendly male dogs who don't mind being bossed around, but she absolutely hates other female dogs.

Bruna is a very energetic dog who loves to chase ball. She is great off leash, very responsive, loves learning new things. She will make a great companion dog for someone who can provide a leadership to this wonderful girl.
