Last Chance

The phone rang three times before the answering machine picked up the call. There wasn’t any message, just the beep to indicate the machine was recording.
“Hello? Ms. Rosenburg, it’s Brian Stevens. Look, I know I’m not suppose to call this number, unless it’s important. But I really thought I should call you, let you know what’s going on. It’s about the client I’ve been keeping an eye on for you. Ah, look, I’m not really sure why I’m watching this guy for you and I guess it isn’t really any of my business either. It’s just that, well, if you have any kind of business, or something, that you need to take care of with this guy, ah, it might be a good idea to take care of it pretty soon, if you can. Ah, see, ah, look, I know the guy’s a vampire and all that, but he sure as hell isn’t like any kind of vampire I’ve ever come across before. But, ah, see, ah, I think the guy is crazy, or something.”
“Look, ah, what I’m trying to say is that I think this guy is trying to get himself killed, or something. Almost every night, he goes out and hunts down other vamps, and gets into fights with them, and kills them. Ah, but, ah, see, he doesn’t just go after one or two vamps at a time, ah, he goes after bunches of them, like four or five or six at a time. Ah, and like every time he does this he gets himself hurt, sometimes pretty bad. Ah, last night he walked into a vamp nest, I don’t know how many vamps were in there, but at least eight or ten, and when he came out, he was pretty messed up. Look, ah, I know vamps are pretty tough and all that, but this guy was bleeding from at least a dozen places, so I, ah, followed him back to his place, and he was hurt so bad, ah, he barely got home before the sun came up. Ah, see, ah, I put a spy cam in his apartment, so I could keep an eye on him, you know, during the day time, to see what he does. Look, ah, I know that when a vamp dies he turns to dust, so I guess he’s alright. But, ah, see, ah, right now he’s lying on the floor, unconscious I guess, and, ah, there‘s blood everywhere.”
“So, ah, like I said, if you got some kind of business with this guy, ah, maybe you should take care of it pretty soon, ah, because, ah, the way things are going, ah, I don’t think he’s going to be around much longer. So, ah, anyway, I just thought I should let you know. I’ll be sending the written weekly report in a couple of days to your London address, but, ah, like I said, ah, you might not have a couple of days, to do whatever, you know, you might want to do.”
