ASTROS SET FOR SPRING IN KISSIMMEE THROUGH 2016 The Astros return to Kissimmee in 2002 to begin their 18th Grapefruit League season at the Osceola County Stadium Complex. In December of 2000, the Osceola County commissioners approved a new lease agreement that will keep the Astros spring training home there through 2016. The Astros moved to their state-of-the-art facility in 1985 after spending the previous 21 years in Cocoa, FL. When it opened, the complex was hailed as the best of its kind in Florida, and its unique "cloverleaf" design has served as host to many local civic events. The playing field at Osceola County Stadium was recognized by Sports Turf Magazine and the Beam Clay Company as its Baseball Field of the Year for 1990-91. Recent improvements to the stadium and surrounding grounds have included renovation of press, ticket office and concessions areas and padding for the outfield fences. The Astros opened their facility on March 3, 1985 when a record crowd of 7,210 saw the Astros defeat the Yankees. The Astros surpassed the 500,000 mark in total attendance in Kissimmee in 1993. Houston first conducted spring training in Apache Junction, AZ in 1962 and 1963 before moving to Cocoa in 1964.
