Dunedin Stadium at Grant Field

Spring Training Dunedin has been the only spring home for the Toronto Blue Jays. This year marks their twenty-fifth spring training season there. The major league players workout at the Cecil P. Englebert Recreational Complex for a couple of weeks in February before moving to Dunedin Stadium at Grant Field for the spring training games. Then the minor league players take over the complex. From 1977 until 1989, the Blue Jays played at Grant Field, which had a seating capacity of 3,417. Grant Field opened in 1930 and was named after the mayor of Dunedin who had donated the land. The first Toronto Blue Jays game ever was played there on March 11, 1977 when the Blue Jays beat the New York Mets 3-1. In 1990, at a cost of approximately $2.4 million dollars, the City of Dunedin built a new stadium called Dunedin Stadium at the same location as Grant Field. This has a capacity of 6,106. The actual playing field and team clubhouses did not change. In the fall of 2000, the Toronto Blue Jays signed an agreement to remain in Dunedin for an additional 15 years pending a $12-million renovation of their facilities which are expected to be ready on March 1, 2002. At that time, the 15-year agreement will kick in and the Jays have two five-year options that could extend the deal to 25 years. The state of Florida will pay $6 million, Pinellas County $3 million with the Jays and Dunedin paying the remainder for the renovations. A new two-story building that will include a clubhouse, training room, weight room, and office space will be built next to the stadium. A new minor-league facility will be built just north of the existing one and will feature new clubhouses, offices, weight rooms, five full fields, four of them arranged in a cloverleaf formation with an observation tower in the centre. A half field also will be built. After spring training is over, Dunedin Stadium at Grant Field becomes the home of the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Class A Florida State League.

When you get to Douglas Avenue, turn right. Parking is at the second stoplight. Direction to stadium (from Sarasota): I-275 North to Exit 15 (State Road 694 - Gandy/Park Blvd.). Left (West) on 694 for 1.5 miles to US 19. Right (north) on US 19 for 11 miles to Sunset Point Road. Left (west) on Sunset Pt. Rd. for 3.5 miles to Douglas Ave. Right (north) on Douglas Ave. for one mile - stadium will be on right. Direction to stadium (from Orlando): I-4 west to I-275 South. I-275 South to Tampa Airport/State Road 60 Exit. State Road 60 Across Courtney Campbell Causeway to Clearwater. State Road 60 to US 19. Right (north) on US 19 to Sunset Pt. Road (3rd traffic light). Left (west) on Sunset Pt. road for 3.5 miles to Douglas Ave. Right (north) on Douglas Ave. for one mile - stadium will be on right. Directions to stadium (from New Port Richey): Alternate 19 south to Main Street Dunedin. Left (east) on Main Street to next light (Douglas Ave.). Right (north) on Douglas Avenue for 1/2 mile - stadium willl be on left.
