Season Update

TEAM/GAME NOTES:

The Sinclair's Sand Gnats started off the season with a perfect record in May (4-0). The rest of the summer proved to be challenging as the team struggled to find the right continuity in the line-up.
The team suffered through two streaks where they lost 5 consecutives games. They started to gel late in the season winning 3 of their last 5 games of the season. The final regular season standings saw the Sand Gnats finish in 12th place (out of 16) with a 13-18 record.
The team started the playoffs in October, pulling off two upsets over the #5 and #6 seeded team. Coming from behind in the first game of the playoofs scoring 11 runs in the 7th inning.
The October magic continued with the Sand Gnats knocking off the #7 seed and finally the #1 seed giving them a spot in the finals, where they ended up playing the #1 seed Sin City in the finals. Below is the official write up for the Championship Finals played on October 21, 2005.

GAME 5 & 6: SAND GNATS = CHAMPIONS!!!

The Sinclair's Sand Gnats needed an extra game to do it, but they are the Regency Slo-Pitch Champions for 2005.
The Sand Gnats arrived at the Regency to learn they would be playing Sin City once again in the Finals. In game one on the night the Sand Gnats fell 23-18 in a time-limit shortened game. The game was filled with questionable calls by the umpires, that essentially cost the Sand Gnats the game. The questionable calls in three innings lead to six runs being scored by Sin City. Despite the calls, the Sand Gnats offense continued to be hot as they have been all through the playoffs. Christian Oliver and Pete Saddler hit homers in the game, and all batters managed at least one hit. The defense was the downfall in the first game as errors and poor decisions throwing to the wrong bases allowed Sin City to advance extra bases.
In game two, the Sand Gnats offense looked liked it stalled as the first six batters were retired in order (the first four batters all grounded out to the shortstop). Sin City capitalized to take a 4-0 lead after two innings. From there, both the defense and offense of the Sand Gnats took over. The Sand Gnats scored one run in the third, thanks to a Ryan Hodges RBI scoring John Carruthers, to cut the lead to 4-1. The Sand Gnats then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kyle Lentz, Pete Saddler, and Kerry Felstead all scored thanks to a string of five consecutive hits. The Sand Gnats allowed two Sin City runs in the fifth before scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lentz and Saddler singled to score Ryan Hodges and Christian Oliver to tie the game, before Felstead doubled to score Lentz and Saddler to make the score 8-6. Neiter team scored in the sixth which set up the drama in the seventh.
Sin City's heart of their order came up. Their number three hitter singled. The clean-up hitter flew out to left center allowing the runner on first to tag and advance to second. The next batter popped up to third, with Mike Pietrangelo making the catch. The sixth batter, singled to score the runner on second to make the score 8-7 with two outs.
With the runner on first, the next batter hit a dribbler up the middle which Mike McLean made a diving play and a soft toss rolled to second, just in time for Lentz to make the final out giving the Sand Gnats their third Playoff Championship and eigth championship overall!
The Sand Gnats finished the season with an overall record of 18-19 (including the playoffs), truly making them the CINDERELLA STORY of the Regency.

2005 Team M.V.P. - Kyle Lentz
1st Runner Up - Ryan Hodges
