2008 Season
Playoff Games Three & Four: Cinderella Gnats Close Out Season
The Sand Gnats entered the quarter-final matchup against the Screamin' Eagles, a team that has given the Gnats fits over the past few years. The Gnats put on a hitting clinic in the late stages of the game. Leading 7-4 going into the fifth inning, the Gnats scored five runs to take a commanding lead. In the fifth, the Eagles walked Gnats home-run King, Kevin De Silva Piques, after Kerry Felstead had singled. Derek Gallacher, two batters later, hit his first homer of the playoffs to give the Gnats the insurance runs they needed to win pulling away by a score of 16-6.
In the semi-finals, the Gnats came out flat against the Stallions and were crushed 13-1 to end the Gnats Cinderella playoff run. The Gnats managed only four hits in the game (Felstead, McLean, McLean, & Saddler).
This ended not only the season for the Gnats, but also closes the book on a long, and successful franchise. The Gnats finish their 14 year run with a combined 9 Championships (regular season & playoffs). The team could revive itself under a new team name and new management. Although all players are now released of their contract obligations and are free to play where they choose.
It's been a blast playing with all of you over the past several years. We all have some memories of years past that will never be duplicated. Thanks again guys...it's been fun! As Harris so often puts it..."Good times"!

Game Summaries (in order of most recent)
Playoff Games One & Two: Gnats Split Games in Early Playoff Action
The Sand Gnats opened the playoffs against Neighbourhood 1 early Saturday morning. The early game didn't do the Gnats any favours as the bats were still sleeping when they were needed the most. The Gnats played well throughout the game with the exception of the fifth inning where they gave up eight runs. Those runs proved costly as the Gnats fell by a score of 11-9.
In game two against Somebuddy's, the bats finally woke up and the Gnats made quick work disposing their friendly foes in five innings with a score of 17-4.
With the mercy win, the Gnats guaranteed themselves a spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. against an opponent still to be determined.
Game Thirty-three: Gnats Win Just By Showing Up
The Sand Gnats got back to the .500 mark as a result of a forfeit over Benchwarmers. The Benchwarmers only had four players show for the game.
Game Thirty-two: Gnats Snap Two Game Losing Skid
The Sand Gnats took advantage of sloppy fielding by Ricki Jo Rebels as they cruised to a 15-9 victory. The Gnats played solid defense shutting out the Rebels in four of the seven innings. The Gnats capitalized on offense cashing in runners in scoring position in innings one and three.
Derek Gallacher notched his fourth dinger of the year, a towering solo shot over centrefield which delighted the crowd on hand with a series of "oooh's" and "ahhh's".
Don Harris gave the Gnats a scare when he tried to catch a foul ball with his face. He was spitting some juice, but continued to play after sitting out an inning.
Game Thirty-one: Woeful Gnats Lose Again!
The end of the regular season can't come soon enough for the awful Gnats. They were soundly defeated by the Benchwarmers 15-5 Tuesday night. Had it not been for careless base running by the Benchwarmers, the score could have been much worse.
The Gnats played well the first two innings of the game, only trailing 7-5. Unfortunately they were unable to muster any more offense as they were shut-out the rest of the way. The Gnats turned some unconventional double plays in the game, again thanks to poor base running.
The remainder of the season is up in the air. No one in the league is sure of rain-out make up games, or playoffs. Rumours continue to run around the league regarding the potential demise of the Regency. More information to come when available.
Game Thirty: Bad News Gnats Strike Again!
One would think that if a team were to score 13 runs in a game, you should win, or at least have a chance to win. That was not the case Tuesday night as the Gnats had their three-game win streak snapped getting destroyed by LT's 28-13.
The outfield fell back into their old habits of misplaying balls allowing LT hitters to take an extra base or sometimes two extra bases on what should have been singles. It had seemed the Gnats had turned a dismal season around, cruising to easy victories in their last two games. The outfield will have to play much better in the final two regular season games if the Gnats have any chance of making a late season run in the playoffs.
The Gnats bats continue to be active with 10 of the 13 batters in the line-up having multiple hit nights. Derek Gallacher connected on a three-run homer, his third of the season, in the third inning. Kevin De Silva Piques also had a homer but was called out for the one homer rule.
The 28 runs given up could be a Gnats record, however stats from previous seasons are missing to so it's impossible to verify. Nonetheless, it was an embarrassing evening for the Gnats.
Game Twenty-nine: Who Are These Guys!
The apocolypse appears to be upon us as the Gnats are on a three game win streak. Who are these guys, and what have you done with the Sand Gnats of June and July?
The Gnats once again dominated Neighbourhood #1, cruising to a 20-7 victory. Neighbourhood #1 scored 6 meaningless runs in the fifth inning, to make the score a little more respectable. The Gnats dominated early scoring six runs in the first inning thanks to another Kevin De Silva Piques homer, his sixth of the season. The flood gates opened in the third inning with another eleven runs, for a commanding 17-1 lead. The Gnats took mercy upon their opponents only scoring three more runs before giving up the six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before closing out the game. The Gnats played solid defense throughout the game, and their hitting over the past two games has been beyond belief. Where were the Gnats hiding for most of the summer?
Game Twenty-eight: Two Straight Wins for Gnats!
School came a little for the Young Guns Friday night as they were taught a tough lesson in slo-pitch as they were mercied 21-3 by the pesky Sand Gnats.
The Gnats went to work on defense right away and played solid, scoreless ball through three innings. At the plate the Gnats jumped on the Young Guns pitchers to the tune of eleven first inning runs as 12 Gnats batters appeared at the plate. The Young Guns pitchers struggled early giving up four base on balls to the first five Gnats batters. Among them was Robb McLean's 12th walk of the season, setting the new BB record, previously set by John Carruthers (2006) and Kerry Felstead (2007). The Gnats walked seven times in the game.
Two runs in the second inning, and eight more in the third put away any hopes of a comeback as the Gnats lead 21-0. The Gnats gave up 2 runs in the fourth and 1 in the fifth to at least give the Young Guns something positive to take away with them.
Game Twenty-seven: Apocolypse? Gnats Win!
After the top of the first inning, it looked like the Gnats were on their way to yet another defeat as they quickly spotted their opponents, Rippers, 6 runs. However, the Gnats played one of their best games on the season making a late inning rally from 5 down to win 14-12.
Trailing 12-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Gnats offense put together a fine display of hitting, batting through the order to score seven runs to take their first lead of the game. In fact, the Gnats had three consecutive triples started by Mike McLean. Kerry Felstead, and Kevin De Silva Piques followed cashing the go-ahead runs. De Silva Piques hit for the cycle, and connected on his sixth homer of the season in the first inning to get back three of the six runs the gave up in the top half of the inning.
Defensively the Gnats played very well despite the little seeing eye singles the Rippers put together. Tim Ciaramitaro played an awesome game in right field tracking a number of balls down, and preventing extra bases on some hits.
Game Twenty-six: Another Game, Another Loss For the Lowly Gnats!
The glory days of the Gnats seem to have passed them by in a wink of a young girl's eye. The Gnats continue to struggle this season dropping another game to Bad Boys 17-5.
The Gnats lead early 3-0 before Bad Boys opened up a can of whoop-ass with solid hitting and fielding. Robb McLean had yet another scary moment in a Gnats uniform, as he hit a ball to the third baseman. The throw to first was high and a bit wide of the base, causing the first baseman off the bag. Unfortunately it was right into the path of McLean as he was just about to cross first base. The hard collision seemed to have KO'ed McLean for about 10-15 seconds before he came to. Despite suggestions that he sit out more than the one inning, McLean took to the field and played the rest of the game. A fine example of a true (or crazy) Gnats warrior.
Game Twenty-five: Back to Life, Back to Reality!
A number of Gnats players returned to the line-up and realized not much has changed. The Gnats had trouble getting runners on base, and had misplayed balls as they were easily defeated by Neighbourhood #1. It was the first win for Neighbourhood #1 over the Gnats in four tries.
Mike Pozzebon made Sand Gnats history with his eighth strike-out of the season, surpassing Don Harris's previous record set just last year.
Game Twenty-four: Gnats Win a Wild One!
With Steve Fish leading off, you know the Gnats are going to have an interesting game. In fact, Pete Saddler and Tim Ciaramitaro were the only Gnats hitters above .500 in the line-up.
Playing with only eight platers, the team managed to pull off the improbable upset by beating Pineridge 17-16. The Gnats scored their 17 runs on only 18 hits. Pineridge fielders had the error bug allowing the Gnats to stay in the game. Kudos go out to Tim Ciaramitaro for playing through a chest muscle injury and swinging the bat one-handed.
Game Twenty-three: Sand Gnats Lose Another!
The Sand Gnats continue to struggle this season as they lost a close one to teh Stallions by a score of 6-4.
Game Twenty-two: Sand Gnats Forfeit
The Sand Gnats had to forfeit their game against LT's as only four players showed for the game. Management was not happy with the lack of communication.
Game Twenty-one: Sand Gnats Crushed!
Playing with five regular roster players, the Gnats were doomed from the start. To make matters worse, Robb McLean kept his tradition alive and was ejected in the fifth inning as the Gnats were destroyed by Ricki Jo Rebels, 14-1.
Game Twenty: Sand Gnats Win Again!
The phone lines continued to be busy Tuesday as the Gnats were once again looking to fill positions for a badly depleted roster. With two hours before game time, the Gnats looked like they might have to forfeit the game as they only had seven players. Thanks to Robb McLean and Tim Ciaramitaro, the Gnats filled out their line-up card with eleven players.
After a slow start and trailing 4-2 after two innings, the Gnats stormed back in the third inning with seven runs to take a commanding 9-4 lead. The Gnats defense played extremely well shutting out their opponents in innings three through five before allowing two runs in the sixth. The Gnats added five insurance runs in the seventh to lead 14-6 before the Gnats defense closed the door.
Mike Pozzebon rebounded from a couple of poor performances and used the bad press as motivation to have one of his best games defensively on the year. "Poz" has also tied a Gnats record with his seventh strike out of the season.
The Gnats would like to thank Guy and Louie (friends of Tim), Bryan Grosvenor, Scott Enns, and Greg (friend of Robb McLean) for filling in.
Game Nineteen: Gnats Hang On!
The phone lines were busy Friday as the Gnats were looking to fill positions for a badly depleted roster. A couple of hours before the game, they had 10 players ready. However, as of game time, they started with eight players. Injured OF, Steve Fish arrived at the game midway through the first inning to score keep. Instead, the Gnats got the umpire to allow a runner from the plate, and Fish was able to give the Gnats nine players. Call-up, Sam Shad finally arrived in the third inning to complete the Gnats line-up.
The Gnats got off to a fast start scoring eight runs in the first inning thanks to a 3-run homer by Kevin De Silva Piques. From there the bats went silent only managing 3 runs in the next three innings. The bats stormed back in the fifth inning with another five runs thanks to a string of eight consecutive singles. The Gnats held a 16-14 lead going into the last inning (time-limit). The Gnats gave one run back in the top of the sixth inning, but were able to double off a Somebuddys base runner for the final out and the victory.
The Gnats would like to thank Bill Nywening, Guy ( a friend of Tim), and Sam Shad for filling in.
Game Eighteen: Gnats Awful Despite Close Score
The Sand Gnats put forth an awful display of fielding in their 18-13 loss to the Benchwarmers. Despite the score being close, the Gnats deserved to lose by 20 runs. The Gnats outfield took its share of lumps, as Mike Pozzebon looked dreadful judging fly balls in left-centre. He was moved to left, and Stephen Fish moved to LC, and put forth a solid effort in the second inning, getting all three put-outs. From there, dropped balls, balls bouncing by the outfield continued to plague the Gnats.
The Gnats infield didn't fair much better as Derek Gallcher was thrown into the uncomfortable position of shortstop and his inexperience at the position showed.
Depsite all of the blunders, the Gnats bats managed to keep the game close late, rallying to within three runs. Mike McLean lead the Gnats, going 4-for-4 on the night with a walk.
Game Seventeen: Sand Gnats Come Alive
The Sand Gnats won their second straight game trouncing Young Guns 16-7.
The game was close through the first five innings with the Gnats holding a 6-5 lead. Despite the close score it appeared the Gnats were in control from the start.
In the sixth inning, the Gnats batted through the order, sending fifteen batters to the plate, while scoring ten runs to put the Young Guns away.
Eight of the eleven batters in the Gnats line-up had multiple hit nights.
Could this be the TSN Turning Point to the Gnats season?
Games Fifteen & Sixteen: Sand Gnats Split Double Header
The Sand Gnats played their last double header of the year losing 17-11 to Bad Boys, and defeating Neighbourhood #1, 13-9.
In game one, the Gnats were never really in the game despite the losing by only six runs. Bad Boys jumped on the Gnats in the first three innings scoring fourteen runs, to lead 14-3. The Gnats offense continued to struggle until the last inning where they scored four runs and sent nine batters to the plate.
Game two was a closely contested battle until the sixth inning. With the game tied 8-8, the Gnats scored four runs to lead 12-8. Neighbourhood could only answer with a single run. The Gnats got that run back in the seventh and shutout Neighbourhood in the bottom half to secure their first win since June 24. The Gnats had their best game at the plate in weeks.
Game Fourteen: Sand Gnats Lose Fourth Straight
The Sand Gnats continue to struggle losing for the fourth straight game 11-4 at the hands of Pine Ridge.
The Gnats allowed runs to score in every inning of the game with the highest runs allowed in the first inning with three. Unfortunately, the Gnats offense sputtered again only scoring in 2 of the seven innings, only managing a pair of runs in the first and fifth inning. All the Gnats runs were again scored by the top of the order. Robb McLean lead the charge going 3-for-4 in the game.
Scott Davis had a ball land awkwardly in his glove that ended up breaking his finger. He is out for 2 weeks. Robb McLean took a bad hop in the first inning in the chest which knocked the wind out of him. He went to a local hospital to have the injury examined. No word on the extent of his injury as of press time.
Game Thirteen: Sand Gnats Set a Record
The Sand Gnats set a team record on the Fourth of July as their opponents, "Rippers", set off some fire works, lighting up the Gnats for 26 runs enroute to a 26-11 victory. The Gnats did score some runs, an area the team has been struggling with as of late.
The Gnats played with only nine guys, and played fairly well despite the Rippers hitting liners to the gaps. The Rippers did an excellent job of singling the Gnats to death, and scoring runners when they got into scoring position. The Gnats could've put 12 players in the field and the Rippers still would've won the game.
Mike McLean lead the Gnats bats going 4-for-4.
Game Twelve: Sand Gnats Squashed
The Sand Gnats were trounced by the Stallions on Canada Day, losing 13-1.
The Gnats went hitless until the fifth inning when Kerry Felstead broke up the perfect game attempt with a single. In the sixth inning, Don Harris had a single and advanced to third on an error. He then scored the only Gnat run on a Mike Pozzebon fielder's choice.
The Gnats defense played well through four innings only giving up three runs before the error flood gates opened allowing 10 Stallions runs. The Gnats were mercied after the sixth inning ending the dismal game.
***An interesting stat for the game...The Stallions shortstop had an assist on 7 of the 18 putouts in the game.
Game Eleven: Gnats Rally Too Little Too Late
The Sand Gnats were defeated by LT's Friday night 13-12. Although the difference was only one run, the Gnats didn't deserve to win the game as weak outfield defense continues to plague the team. The telling tale of the game was the middle of the Gnats order who went a combined 1-for-16 in the game.
Kevin De Silva Piques gave the Gnats a glimmer of hope with a three run shot with two outs in the seventh to close to within one. The McLean's also had strong nights at the plate, both going 3-for-4.
Game Ten: Two Straight For The Gnats
The Sand Gnats continued their strong play defeating Ricki Jo's Rebels 12-8 this past Tuesday.
After a slow start, the Gnats bats came alive in the third inning scoring five runs to take a 6-2 lead. By adding four more runs in the fourth inning, the Gnats had a commanding 10-2 lead before the Gnats outfield began to make things interesting.
Outfielders Mike Pozzebon and Stephen Fish committed costly errors allowing 6 runs to score in the fifth and sixth innings to reduce the lead to two. Fish had perhaps his worst game of his career, having two grounders roll by him in right field, and going 0-for-4 at the plate.
A single by Kerry Felstead in the seventh inning gave the Gnats all the insurance they would need as the Rebels were shut out in the bottom of the seventh.
Kevin De Silva Piques lead the offense with a double and his second homer of the season. Robb McLean had his best performance at the plate this season going 4-for-5.
Game Nine: Gnats Win Close One
The Sand Gnats defeated the Spartans in a closely contested match 5-4 this past Friday.
Runs were at a premium in the game as the Sand Gnats scored all five of their runs in the second inning thanks to a string of singles by the bottom half of the order, and a double by Pete Saddler that cashed in two of the five runs. In total the Gnats managed just seven hits in the game.
It was the defense that shone bright for the Gnats. The infield continued their outstanding play, and even went so far as to rotate around the positions for the first four innings. First baseman, Don Harris, made some great scoops from throws by Derek Gallacher in the last inning to secure the victory. Outfielder Pete Saddler rediscovered his legs and made some great catches.
The only defensive hiccup was in the outfield when Stephen Fish had to look through the jungle at the right field fence for a ball which allowed Spartan batter Mark Lane to score an inside the park home run. In the next inning Mike "PedoPoz" Pozzebon threw a ball out of bounds to score and advanace some runners.
Game Eight: Gnats Lose Another
The Sand Gnats suffered another loss, this time a heartbreaker 13-12 to the Young Guns.
The Gnats struggled early and were unable to score a run until the third inning when they scored three runs, thanks to a home run by Gnats call-up, Steve Gilliam. Heading into the fourth inning the Gnats trailed 6-3. The Gnats bats exploded as they batted around to the tune of nine runs to take a commanding 12-6 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Young Guns stormed right back with seven runs on a few Gnats errors to take a 13-12 lead. The Gnats had last at-bats in the shortened game (time limit) and had runners at first and third with one out. They were unable to score a run giving them their second straight loss in the regular season.
Game Seven: Gnats Lose Regular Season Opener
The Sand Gnats suffered their first loss of the regular season to the Spartans 11-8 on Friday night.
The Gnats started the game with a three-up, three-down inning, as Tim Ciaramitaro was doubled up at first after a Don Harris liner was snagged by the third baseman. Fortunately, the Gnats forced the Spartans to do the same in the first inning.
In the second inning, the Gnats scored three runs thanks to doubles by Kerry Felstead and Stephen Fish. The Spartans responded with six runs thanks to misplayed balls by the Gnats outfielders. Unfazed, the Gnats answered right back with five runs in the third inning as a series of singles were hit and runners scoring on doubles by Pete Saddler and Derek Gallacher.
The Gnats bats went dead as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Spartans took control of the game in the fourth inning with four runs thanks to a Behn Lane homer, and they added a single run in the sixth to secure the victory.
The Gnats offense went sour late in the game, and the bottom five batters in the order combined for only three hits. The outfield had another rough night allowing runners to advance on some bobbled balls.
Game Six: Gnats Buzz to Victory!
The Sand Gnats won their final exhibition game 19-9 over Neighbourhood #2 on Tuesday.
The Gnats jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead after one inning and never looked back. Neighbourhood #2 once again played short handed (eight players) and the Gnats took advantage scoring in all innings except the third. Pete Saddelr hit a homer in the second inning and Derek Gallacher hit one out two at bats later only to be called out since Neighbourhood had yet to hit a homer in the game(match +1 rule). After a Neighbourhood Pizza homer, Gallacher had another dinger finally count in the fourth inning for his first official career homer and first of the season.
Stephen Fish once again took advantage of the handicapped opponents and hit his second triple of the season. The initial play was ruled a double on fielder indifference as the throw went home. Upon further video tape replay, it was ruled a triple.
The Gnats open the season this Friday at 8:30 against a to be determined opponent.
Robb McLean took to the mound for the first time this season and picked up the victory in place of the ill John Carruthers.
Game Five: Revenge at the REG!
The Sand Gnats were looking for some revenge on rival Somebuddy's this past Friday. In their game last week, Somebuddy's came back to defeat the Gnats 11-10 in the last inning.
Fielding only nine players, the Gnats had to play Pete Saddler in the outfield with a hip flexor injury. Saddler made the move to left field, while Mike Pozzebon patrolled centre, and Scott Davis in right. Kein De Silva Piques started his second straight game despite a sore back and throwing arm.
The Gnats jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after one and half innings, before allowing eight runs to fall behind 8-6 after two. The Gnats gained five of the eight back in the third, only to see Sombuddy's respond with three to even the game at 11 after three innings.
From there, the Gnats defense played stellar, particularly the outfield who had their best game of the season (despite only 3 players in the OF). The Gnats scored single runs in innings 4-6 to complete the scoring, giving the Gnats the 14-11 victory.
Don Harris and De Silva Piques were the only Gnats to have a perfect night at the plate.
Game Four: Shoot-out at the REG!
The Sand Gnats found themselves in a shoot-out this past Tuesday night, as offenses were on fire and the defenses left something to be desired.
Your boys in green took to the field against Neighbourhood Pizza #2, and each team scored a quick 3 runs in the first inning. The Gnats welcomed newcomer Kevin De Silva Piques to the line-up and he dazzled the crowd with a 3-run rocket over the right field fence. The teams went back and forth scoring runs left and right through the first three innings. Neighbourhood #2 scored seven runs in the third inning, only to be topped by the Gnats who came back with nine of their own to take the lead 14-13 (after 3 innings). Neighbourhood #2 only managed two runs in the remaining three innings, whereas the Gnats continued to have the hot bats scoring seven more to win the game 21-15.
Seven of the ten Gnats players had multiple hits in the game. Pete Saddler and Derek Gallacher both connected on homers but were ruled out due to the league "Match + 1-homer" rule. Stephen Fish had the only other extra base hit with a triple in the fifth inning on a gap-er to right-centre where the centerfielder had only one arm. Way to pick on the handicapped Fish!!
Game Three: Gnats Blow Lead
The Sand Gnats pissed away a 10-4 lead to lose by one 11-10 to Somebuddy's.
After storming out to a commanding 9-0 lead after the first two innings, the Gnats offense went for a dump, managing a single run in the fifth inning.
Despite having only eight hits in the game, the Gnats showed patience at the plate early in the game. The bottom five hitters in the line-up were dismal at the plate going a combined 2-for-13. Ben Carruthers continued to hit well with another multi-hit game. Mike McLean and Kerry Felstead were the only other Gnats batters to have more than one hit. In fact, only two other Gnats batters had a hit in the game (John Carruthers and Tim Ciaramitaro). Five Gnats walked including Robb McLean who recorded his fifth walk of the year in the lead-off position.
The Gnats infield played extremely well, however, the outfield will need to step up their play before the regular season commences in a couple of weeks.
Game One and Two: 2008 Season Under Way
The Sand Gnats opened the season with a twin bill this past Friday.
In game one, the Gnats played against a new addition to the leage, The Dodgers. The Dodgers were apparently in the "D" division last year and moved down to "REC" after a miserable season. The Gnats offense looked very rusty from the off season, managing a single run through the first three innings. Solid defense allowed pitcher John Carruthers to get out of a number of jams. Eight runs in the final four innings gave the Gnats their first win of the season as they cruised to an 11-4 win. Pete Saddler lead the offense with his first homer of the year, bouncing off the top of the fence in left field.
Game two was full of excitement as the Gnats took a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. The bats fell silent until the last inning. Down 12-6 entering the last inning, the Gnats showed patience at the plate and had some key hits to pull even and end the game 12-12. Ben Carruthers, Scott Davis, Stephen Fish and Robb McLean had multiple hits in the game.
