He
was born in a humble family
from a worker block called
Hammerschmiede in the outskirts of Augsburg. Now his 4 children
have no economic troubles and he's very proud of it.
At 4 an aunt gave him a ball and since then he was playing in
the street...but he also
liked very much ice hockey, which is a top sport in Augsburg. He stared
to play with a fake name in the suburb's team before the age permited.
Since 1971 he's playing in
different clubs and his career as a pro lasted for 20
years since 1978 till 1997.
He was 13 years in the top class spanish Liga playing for
the 3 bigr teams of the country: FC Barcelona, Real
Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Bernd was married young and has 4 children and two grandchildren. "I
loved to stay at home watching my children growing up".
He loves to stay with the family and likes to protect his
private moments.
The security measures he takes are not only at home, he
also had bodyguards for his family and himself since 1981
when a playmate was kidnapped.
Despite the fantastic player he
was and
the Trophies he won, he will never be the sympathetic idol
for the fans or the symbol for the ULTRA sections. In his
own words, "I don't want to be an idol like
a person, only like a player", so, belive
me, he does everything he can to be distant from the
fans.
But after all he cannot avoid the fan tributes like my
page ;-) or to be remembered like something more than a
good player. His special character is the guilty of the
love and hate he arouses.
Bernd interrupted the contacts with his parents (and sister) since 1983
due to personal problems and finally the 'lost son of Germany' has
reestablished communication just after his father passed away in 2000.
The fans blame his wife Gaby as the 'femme fatal 'who
influence him in the wrong way and actually his former wife
received big part of the
hate the fans felt for him. This marriage was over in 2008 and he has a
new partner, Elena, who is pregnant of his 5th child.
His luxus life and the way he says everything ("I
know I'm not diplomatic") surely has
something linked with the lot of troubles he finds
everywhere ("I like to say what I think").
So he's valiant and polemic.
He doesn't like to be famous out the stadiums and being
interviewed for the journalist is not his favourite hobby
but he's honest and he never bites his tongue and that is an
important reason for his fans to love him and for the rest to
respect him.
He never
looks for an
excuse, he hates to play the victimist role and he
doesn't mind his public image. He's not the german idol
he could be because of his renounce to the nationalteam at
age 23. It was a key decision in his career because it means
to renounce to the big cups and other international
personal nominations "I
regret a little bit on it, I have never played a World Cup due to non
sportive subjects, maybe I missed a good councellor". But
he was strong to stand it any
much more, like the time he was injured and he lost the
chance to play the World Cup 1982. Or the long year he
was sent off the FC Barcelona squad. "It
was hard because I knew I was the best player and our coach Venables
was not fair". But he can
"stand everything in football because football is
not the main object in my life, my family is a step over
everything. I cannot play or do anything without the
support of my wife and children". Bernd
dixit.

He wants to become a great football coach and
