But it was a open secret that Real Madrid got it: Bernd and Gaby met president MENDOZA some weks before summer at 'Taillerent Restaurant' in Paris to agree the move. The family moved to Madrid with the intention of a new beginning, far from troubles and scandals, in a serious club, which have bought Schuster to lead the white machine to drive the conquest of Europe: The Cup of Europe (now called Champions League Cup).

In the season 1988-89 Real Madrid had a very good good team with BUTRAGUEÑO, HUGO SANCHEZ, BUYO, MICHEL, CAMACHO, GALLEGO, CHENDO, ... who won last 3 Spanish championships but always failed in Europe. With Bernd, a new star joins the white galaxy.

The beginning was hard for the Blond Angel. The Real style was very different from FC Barcelona. Bernd tried to be the axe in midfield like in the Catalan club he did before. But here the team needs a different conductor. After 8 weeks, Bernd understands his new role and gives Real more speed using several options to start the offensive game. Dutch trainer Leo BEENHAKKER placed Schuster in the midfield and gave him total freedom into Real style: "the ball runs shared for all players, his quality touch is an advantage for speed". Real Madrid wins the Spanish championship 1988-89 with nice offensive game. Real also won the Spanish Cup 1989 vs. Real Valladolid.

In the European competition, Real Madrid won his big rival PSV Eindhoven of ROMARIO with a wonderful performance of Bernd. The final match would be in Nou Camp and Bernd dreams to win the Cup in Barcelona. However, Real Madrid meets AC Milan of SACCHI and VAN BASTEN and the team cannot reach the final. The coach BEENHAKKER is replaced for the Welch trainer John Benjamin TOSHACK due to the new fail in Europe.

It was a happy season where Bernd have found calm and happyness. "I'm happy here, it's a big change after FC Barcelona. Here I have found the calm and I'm happy to play every week to win and win. I know I'm not the star now, but this team doesn't need it, we are altogether the star".

The new season 1989-90 under coach TOSHACK starts. Captain Juan Antonio CAMACHO is retired so the team signed Fernando HIERRO.

The new season seems to show again  the same powerful team to enjoy football at Bernabeu stadium. And it runs. TOSHACK placed Bernd as libero. He will be far from the goal but Real will have a better connection defence-midfield, this is very important when a team has a high ball possesion.  Real Madrid scored 109 goals, a record not yet improved. HUGO SANCHEZ was the number one scorer of Europe (also Bulgarian STOICHKOV) both Golden Shoe with 38 goals. MARTIN VAZQUEZ was brilliant and fans song to  Bernd "Torero, Torero" in different matches, special words reserved for best players. Again Real won the Liga.

The Cup was lost in the final game vs. FC Barcelona. The Dutch Joahn Cruyff need the tittle because the season in FC Barcelona was very bad and he was in a risk to be sacked.

In the European Cup, Real Madrid falls again vs. AC Milan. It was a big hit, Real have a top team that cannot reach a good performance vs italian teams. Bernd played all the season in the libero position and TOSHACK accepts in public Bernd is a basic key player in his system.

When season finishes, half the team go to Italy  for the World Cup 1990. Real Madrid plans a tour to Mexico and Southern USA. But only Schuster, Buyo and Hugo Sanchez are the big stars available while the rest of big stars are playing the World Cup. Unfortunately Bernd is injured in his back since 2 weeks so he tryies to skip the tour. President MENDOZA, who is interested to sign the new stars HAGI (ROM) and PROSINECKI (YUG), now can see his chance to replace the German brain of Real for the new eastern young stars.

Mendoza attacks Bernd trying to start a quarrel throught the press "He's just a boy, he tryied to skip the tour, he is not a profesional,, he tryied his family to join him for the tour. This tour is not a holiday trip!". But Bernd, fullexpertised of past problems, accepts to go alone to the 4-weeks-tour (even he was not ready to play untill 3 weeks later) and Mendoza must keep in silence. The fans cannot understand where is the problem, but Mendoza calls Bernd after the tour to speak about an agreement to sell him. Bernd denies any destination, he just want to remain in Madrid like last 2 years, there is still one year of contact to play in white. Trainer TOSHACK says it is his decision to replace Bernd and, nobody still understands,... Bernd receives the freedom and a lot of millions pessetas to leave Real while fans don't agree the movement.  In MARCA sportjounal the poll says 92 per cent of the fans do not agree the president and preffers Schuster to stay. Mendoza also sells Martin Vazquez.

So the golden German is free in summer thinking about his future. The new season starts and Real shows it needs a brain because midfield is not running without Bernd and Martin Vazquez. But it is too late. Fans are angry and the white club prepares for the president election...

Bernd wants to remain in Madrid, where his family is happy. Atletico Madrid is playing very bad, it has a good team but the midfield is a chaos. Every body says the best conductor ever for Atletico Madrid is living in Madrid and it is free of contract. President of Atletico Madrid Jesus GIL says Bernd is too much expensive. In october Atletico Madrid fails in UEFA and it is playing very bad in Liga, and GIL decides his team needs Bernd Schuster. A new challenge began.
