Virtually unknown outside th US, the Australian Shepherd is now increasing in populaity becouse of its obedient and willing nature, as well as its natural good looks. Originalyy bred as a working shepherd suitable for the varied climate of California, the Australian Shepherd has adapted superbly to both family lif and work as a service dog, especially in search and rescue. The breed has a temperament similar to those of the Golden and Labrador Retrievers. It is affectionat and playful, but maintains a basic working instinct. This is not yet a "designer"dog, although reducing its size is and objective of some breeders.
This breed originated in California in the 1800's, although its ancestors include sheepdogs from New Zealand and Australia.

Weight range: 35-70 lb (16-32 kg)
Height range: 18-23 in (46-58 cm)
This dog does well with children, other dogs, urban living, and the cold. It needs to be groomed a lot, and it reacts really well to doggy training.
It can have a red, liver, blue merle, or black coat.
