If you've been near any bulletin boards or windows on campus, you may have noticed fluers for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance (GALA) club. The GALA Club is a campus for, but not limited tom gay and lesbian students attending UCC.
Currently advising GALA are Nancy Nowak, Ann Foland and ASUCC Student Body President Jim Jensen, who is also GALA's current President.
Jensen said GALA is an "organization on campus that provides a safe place to talk about issues that concern gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, transgendered, or anyone else who doesn't feel like they are part of the mainstream." He went on to say "GALA is here to serve the community. I guess you could call us a social service club."
The GALA club has also been intrumental in providing the campus with informational opportunities on different subjects including health. GALA sponsored a talk on AIDS and is now in the process of helping to sponsor a Holocaust exhibit for the campus.
Membership to GALA has been up to seventeen, but attendance seems to depend on the schedules of those involved. When asked if mos members of GALA were gay, Jensen replied, "Everyone is different, but it's about 50/50, but the mend don't seem to have a problem being out, where the women don't really want to discuss it."
Whether you're gay or straight everyone is welcome to join GALA, which meets at noon on Fridays in the ESB Umpqua Room.
