What's Acrophobia?

"Acrophobia" (or the fear of acronyms!) is an online game offered by Berkeley Systems through their BEZERK.COM site.

Here's how it works:
In a "room" with up to 13 other people, you are presented onscreen with a category (such as Sports, Animals, or Celebrities) and a 3 to 7 letter acronym (for instance, BETW). You then have 60 seconds to type in words that make sense for the letters given, that make sense in the category given, and then submit them (you hit Enter). If the category was Sports, for instance, and the acronym BETW, you might type in Better Eat Those Wheaties.

There are no right answers, and the goal is to make a clever and witty Acro that others will like, and vote for. At the end of 60 seconds, the remote internet server takes the submissions from all 14 people and then sends them back to your computer screen--but you don't know who wrote what! You then vote for the best "acro," with the exception that you cannot vote for your own. Players receive points for each vote they get; the player whose acro won the round gets additional points equal to the number of letters in the "acro." The fastest recorded acro gets 2 "speed points," and everybody who voted for the winning acro gets a point. When a player reaches 30 total points, the top 2 players then "face off" by submitting 3 anonymous acros each, and the remaining players vote on those acros to see who wins the game.

All of this is free; about every 15 minutes or so about 20 seconds of ads appear on your computer screen, and that's what pays for it. Most players treat these like TV ads, leaving for a moment if they need to.

Listen to one Acrophobiac explain the fascination with Acrophobia:
There are several elements which make this an interesting game. If you like word games like crossword puzzles, you'll like Acrophobia. I also enjoy meeting in rooms with "regulars," players I've come to know over time. In my case, I frequent a set of rooms for those who are "40-something," so that I have "roomies" who are close to my age.

At the bottom of the computer screen is the Chat Box, where you can type in comments to others in the room. Some of the commentary is quite hilarious.

Here are a few acros that have been submitted:
Category: General Acrophobia Acro: THMSKR
Winner
: Timex: Hit, mangled.... still keeps running!

Category: Sports Acro: POFP
Winner:
Pong often follows ping.

Category: Food & Drink Acro: SMTWLB
Winner: Snacks? Mike Tyson wanted lobes bad.

Humor rules the day in Acrophobia, and many times people laugh out loud (LOL) at the things people come up with. Acrophobia is a lot of fun, especially as it lets you get to know people from all over the world: Canada, Australia, the United States all are represented on Team FortyTude. We enjoy getting to know people from around the world.

If you want to try Acrophobia, you need a Windows-95 compatible (no Mac version yet), and an internet connection. You can run through our local provider, MHTC-Net, just fine. There is no cost. You can download Acrophobia by starting at the BEZERK.COM site.
