America's librarians and the American Civil Liberties Union have a First Amendment gripe with Uncle Sam.

Represented by the ACLU, the librarians are challenging regulations that require internet filters on computers in public libraries receiving federal funds.

Filters preventing access to pornography and other unseamly information are required on all internet connections--not just those used by persons under age 18.

Libraries for years have successfully shielded children from erotic and other inappropriate materials by keeping them under lock and key--available only to adult patrons.

And libraries have maintained unfiltered computers for adults and filtered computers for children in physically separate locations.

Bluenoses in Congress, however, don't like the idea of federal funds allowing even adult access to porn.

Big Brother strikes again.(8 APRIL 2001)
