What happens when computers, their accessories, internet connections or power supplies go down?

Nothing. No e-mail, no word processing, no games, no World Wide Web. Nothing.

It's bad enough when a personal computer develops glitches. Compound that chaos several times when small and large businesses can't do business because of cyber problems.

Even memos and letters can't be typed, unless antique manual or electric typewriters are stowed with other emergency supplies and equipment.

Oh, yes, forget the electric gizmos if the power is off. And forget multiple copies if no carbon paper is available.

The Editor's fast DSL (digital subscriber line) service stopped operating last Thursday, forcing the purchase and installation of a slow external 56K modem that supposedly would never be needed to temporarily access the rest of the world.

If the power goes off, The Editor even has a wide-carriage Royal and a packet of carbon paper with which to communicate in the 21st Century.(10 JUNE 2001)
