So what if 70 percent of polled Americans support embryonic stem-cell research.

So what if 3,000 Americans die every day from Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's and other diseases that could someday be treatable using stem cells.

So what if stem-cell research also shows promise for effective treatment of diabetes, heart disease, burns and arthritis.

So what if stem cells are obtained from frozen embryos left over, unusable and discarded after infertility treatments.

Dubya suspended such research about six months ago and probably will permanently ban federal financial support for the process because his supporters--right-wing conservatives and religious zealots--believe the embryos are unborn children.

Remember that religious conservatives also believed the earth was flat, the sun revolved around the earth and individuals with epilepsy were possessed by the devil. (8 JULY 2001)
