More tax cuts? Reduce government revenues while America’s federal, state and local agencies are waging international war and beefing up homeland security?

Republicans are pushing for $90 billion in business windfalls along with accelerated across-the-board tax-rate cuts enacted earlier this year.

Democrats are pushing for a $70-billion measure with some business tax relief, but mostly benefiting laid-off workers with expanded unemployment and health-insurance benefits.

In the wings is another Democratic Party homeland-defense proposal providing $20 billion for infrastructure and transportation projects.

Both tax-cut proposals are sheer madness, blatant knee-jerk reactions to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent anthrax hysterias. Both are classic political ploys designed to line the pockets of supporters.

Sept. 11 already has doomed any prospect for reducing the national debt, stabilizing Social Security and Medicare and providing prescription benefits for America’s impoverished seniors.

America already is spending billions of nonexistent dollars to pulverize Osama bin Laden and his supporters in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Don’t cut taxes. Increase them. Now. (4 NOVEMBER 2001)
