You could almost hear America singing, “When Johnny came marching home again, hurrah, hurrah.”

The United States has always been gleefully fascinated with quirky cults and their braindead followers.

And John Walker-Lindh of Mill Valley, Calif., alias Abdul Hamid, was a member of a Seventh Century cult—the Taliban in Afghanistan--when captured by the Northern Alliance.

He fits the profile of typical cult members: intelligent, middle class, white, educated, spiritual, aimless, spineless and gullible.

Cult members want powerful gurus and their mystical philosophies to manage their lives and provide all the answers. Fanatical Muslims fit the bill for Walker-Lindh.

Many cult members are rescued by families and reprogrammed. In Walker-Lindh’s case, the rescuers were American military personnel and the reprogramming will involve prosecution and imprisonment.

Osama bin Laden, Walker-Lindh’s mentor, must be turning over in his grave. (27 JANUARY 2002)
