There ought to be laws against construction work on busy streets during business hours.

Coping with hot asphalt, especially during the heat of spring and summer days, must be as miserable for the workers as the resulting congestion is for motorists and merchants.

While travel delays are simply frustrating for vehicle drivers, businesses along the construction route suffer monumental financial losses while pavers pave, rollers roll and painters stripe.

So what if night-work pay differentials were necessary. Prospective employees aren’t scarce. Road crews are already paid well for their relatively unskilled work.

A side benefit to night work would be the safer environment for flaggers and other workers because of reduced traffic. (12 MAY 2002)
