It was bound to happen.

Has the mellowness of advancing age finally produced a void of grievances, a dearth of piques, a lack of peeves on which to base this week’s Letter From The Editor?

Or perhaps the entire universe has zonked out.

The War on Terrorism has effectively tempered national outrage and fear. The economy is flexing its muscles again. Even airline travel is back to normal.

Television is basking in nostalgic reminders of the good old days in prime time. Cable news networks are once again scratching for headlines.

Perhaps it is residual numbness from the terrible trauma of Sept. 11 or a calm before another storm.

Perhaps everyone is simply waiting for the other shoe to drop. (19 MAY 2002)
