Cream doesn’t always rise to the top.

Take affirmative action (please), for example.

When the government-imposed mandate was implemented virtually everywhere in America in 1964, its goal was to provide equal opportunities for females, minorities and the handicapped.

The fair-minded among us had no problems with ensuring that everyone started on the ground-floor path to success.

But starting on the bottom rungs, gaining expertise and competing fairly for advancements weren’t the results of affirmative-action programs implemented in most venues.

Much to the dismay of qualified white males everywhere, unqualified females, minorities and handicapped persons were given preferential treatment for entry and positions of authority and responsibility.

Affirmative action evolved suddenly from a program of gradual progress to a juggernaut of immediate implementation—a glorious example of America’s lust for instant gratification and political correctness. (15 DECEMBER 2002)
