There are good—and bad—news on America’s transportation scene.
First, the good news:
San Francisco became the first major metropolis to outlaw the Segway Human Transporter on public sidewalks.
Whoopee. No gay or straight riders on electric-powered, 95-pound gyro machines dodging pedestrians at 12.5 miles per hour.
Next on the banned list for pedestrian venues everywhere should be bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, battery-powered wheelchairs and other licensed and unlicensed vehicles.
Now, the really bad news:
Chrysler has unveiled the street-legal Dodge Tomahawk as a “concept” motorcycle capable of reaching 400 mph.
Its 10-cylinder, 500-horsepower engine is mounted on an 8 ½-foot-long frame with handlebars in front and dual wheels in back.
Weighing 1,500 pounds, it is capable of doing 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds.
No one knows if the Tomahawk will muffle its exhaust system or employ air brakes. (26 JANUARY 2003)
