Real foreign and domestic threats endangering America aren’t just Middle East crazies. They’re also nasty viruses and bacteria.

First crossing the United States borders was the acute immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), killing or sickening thousands through unprotected exchanges of precious bodily fluids.

Then came E.coli, salmonella, lyme disease and the West Nile virus and real and potential terrorist weapons such as anthrax and smallpox.

The latest health threats to America are the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), mad cow disease and monkeypox.

Spraying Lysol and washing one’s hands regularly may deter the common cold. But won’t stop virulent airborne, digested and tactile invaders.

Stock up on air filters, facemasks, surgical gloves and irradiated food. The end is near. (15 JUNE 2003)
