America’s Independence Day traditionally embraces independence from rational restrictions on potent fireworks.

Despite draconian ordinances and laws in most areas of the United States, celebrants manage to buy and light off firecrackers, roman candles, mortars and rockets each July 4.

And set structures and foliage on fire, burn and maim human beings and terrorize household pets.

Always a colossal waste of money, fireworks allow observers to see their pricey toys literally go up in smoke.

Add in possible bail bonds, fines and property damages and the cost of civil disobedience can get really expensive.

Pass the punk, please. (6 JULY 2003)
